Role
Who you are
- Knowledge and preferably experience of ETL/ELT pipeline authoring tools
- Fluency with SQL objects, and the design, authoring and profiling of complex structured queries
- Experience of Python, preferably but not essentially in Databricks
- A willingness to contribution to agile rituals, estimating work thoughtfully and delivering accountably
- Your ability to communicate complexity in plain English and understand your audiences
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Data Engineer to join the Data Engineering Team as part of our Data & Analytics function in the Technology division
- Hours: 35 per week (standard Anthony Nolan working hours)
- You will be joining the Data Engineering team to use your SQL and Python skills to help the team provide access to the organisation’s data for its community of data analysts and wider business users
- You will participate in design decision making and development of data pipelines in Azure Data Factory and Databricks to deliver maximum value from the organisation’s data. You’ll do this by:
- Building secure, performant ingestion pipelines to bring internal and external source system data into our analytic platforms
- Building and maintaining libraries of re-usable functions
- Building and maintaining functional solutions (for example, in Microsoft PowerApps) for line of business use
- Identifying and capturing opportunities for incremental improvement to the team’s platforms and software
- Training and teaching technical skills to our less-technical colleagues elsewhere within the organisation
- Delivering engineering solutions for user stories, using Azure resources, including Databricks as appropriate
- Monitoring and troubleshooting batch ingestion pipelines using Azure Data Factory, SQL, and Databricks
- Supportingdata analyst colleagues with investigations into their data/work
- Performing data investigations/analysis to support our business people
- Working on data-related projects as required
- Contributing to the success of the data engineering team by helping to improve its code, documentation, and development standards
- Participating in the team’s agile rituals

Founded in 1974 to find bone marrow donors for people suffering with blood cancer, Anthony Nolan is today one of Britain's largest recruiters of stem cell donors, along with DKMS, the Welsh Blood Service and NHS Blood and Transplant. As only one in four people with blood cancer will find a compatible donor in their family, Anthony Nolan's work saves over 1000 lives a year worldwide.
Aside from recruiting donors, Anthony Nolan conducts research through the Anthony Nolan Research Institute, with its findings reducing post-transplant complications and increasing quality of life for patients. It also maintains the UK's first dedicated cord blood bank which allows new mothers to donate their umbilical cords for research.
While there have been huge advances in treating blood cancer since Anthony Nolan was founded, there is today a major shortfall in donors, driven by a steep decline fron 2019 onwards. Anthony Nolan is heavily engaged in raising awareness of this issue, using major public events such as the London Marathon, where its team of volunteers will run to raise money and remind people of their vital work in this area.
