Role
Who you are
- 7+ years, with meaningful time building end-to-end systems and product experiences
- Strong experience building high-throughput systems with a focus on reliability and scalability
- Experience with our backend stack (Node.js, MongoDB, PostgreSQL)
- Experience building workflow orchestration, automation systems, or AI agents
- High degree of cross-functional collaboration — past colleagues in product, design, and business would speak highly of you
- Strong sense of ownership and drive, excellent communication, and a proactive approach to identifying and solving problems
What the job involves
- Today, restaurant owners spend huge amounts of time reacting to operational problems: managing incoming orders, handling kitchen bottlenecks, coordinating delivery, updating menus, and responding to customer issues under constant time pressure
- RestX is building the autonomous operating system for restaurants. We are building systems that detect issues using signals across fragmented systems, automate decisions at scale, and help restaurants run with minimal manual intervention, helping owners focus on their passion: making great food and delighting their customers
- This team owns ordering, fulfillment, menu syncs, POS integrations, kitchen workflows, and operational automations – systems directly in the critical path for restaurant revenue and guest experience
- We're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer, who cares deeply about scale and reliability, while building compelling product experiences and has the range to own it end-to-end. You'll build mission-critical software systems that directly impact restaurant revenue and reputation
- Build autonomous restaurant operations software and innovate new interaction models between operators and software
- Work on mission-critical systems that directly impact guest experience with our product, restaurant revenue and reputation, and operate as a leader in reliability and scale
- Build systems in a domain with rich real-time data loops with immediate customer feedback, and have a direct impact on Owner’s revenue trajectory by greatly reducing support tickets and churn
- Demonstrate extreme ownership across workflows spanning ordering, kitchens, delivery, and fulfillment
Our take
The Pandemic caused a major upheaval in the US restaurant industry. Smaller operations struggled to stay afloat amidst brick-and-mortar closures, and as the demand for home delivery soared their margins were tightened further by hefty third-party delivery app charges. Add to that the fact that consumers become customers of the delivery app, not the restaurant itself, and it’s a development that has spelt real trouble for independent locales. Owner has set out to level the playing field.
Owner’s platform provides independent restaurants with the infrastructure they need to take control of their business without deferring to third-party apps like GrubHub and Deliveroo. It offers marketing, online ordering, and support solutions to over 10,000 restaurants across the U.S. The company has taken impressive first strides, too: they have a 7 figure run-rate, over 105% monthly revenue retention, and helped restaurants avoid millions in online order platform fees.
It’s a hugely attractive proposition for independent business owners, and research suggests it’s a winning idea for consumers too. Over 60% say they’d prefer to deal with restaurants directly, but historically the infrastructure simply hasn’t been in place to do so. With Owner seeing impressive traction by tripling its customers between 2023 and 2024, it's unsurprising that its 2025 funding is being channelled into engineering and design teams, alongside the development of new tools.
