Who you are
- This role requires a strong ability to build and maintain relationships, while actively seeking new business opportunities
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- 4+ years of relatable Key Account experience where calling on retail buyers in small format, working directly with a wholesaler, in the CPG industry
- Advanced presentation skills (both creating slides and presenting)
- Ability to work with cross functional teams (Operations, Customer Service, Accounting, Distribution, and Finance) across organizations to achieve results
- Deep comfort with joining a high growth start up environment
- Advanced problem solving capability and willingness to work with ambiguity and adaptability to flex to market dynamics
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Sheets, Docs, Slides)
- Previous experience with Circana, Vividly, and VIP preferred but not required
- Must have a valid driver's license & clean motor vehicle record (MVR): with no major violations
- Safely operate personal vehicle to fulfill work-related duties; this position involves driving a personal vehicle for work-related purposes
- Willingness to travel up to 40% as needed (for Retailer meetings, distributor meetings, trade shows, etc.)
- Ability to stand in store and sit in a vehicle for extended periods of time
- Ability to carry equipment and product up to 50 lbs
What the job involves
- Reports to: Director, National Accounts
- As a Key Account Manager, Small Format you will be responsible for managing and growing strategic convenience retail, drugstore, and hardware accounts such as Walgreens, CVS, Circle K, Ace hardware, etc. ensuring the successful execution of both distributor execution and promotional activities, while driving key decisions on packaging, pricing, and product placement
- You will collaborate across various internal teams to deliver results that align with business goals
- Account Management: Strengthen customer relationships at both national and regional customers, with a focus on both hunting (20%) for new opportunities, and farming (80%) existing accounts to maximize growth
- Business Planning & Execution: Develop and implement national plans to achieve/exceed sales targets. Collaborate with field/DSD teams to ensure we are maximizing Fill Rates with a target of 90%. Ensure trade investments are smart, measurable, and are monitored through Vividly
- Business Planning & Analysis: Accurate & timely forecasts for case volume, trade spend, and profitability; analyze retailer and syndicated data (using Circana and VIP) to understand account trends & develop business plans to maximize Liquid Death sales & share; achieve account level sales & profit targets
- Marketplace Execution: Completing regular field and market engagements to conduct business reviews, market tours, attend buyer meetings, and attend trade shows, etc
Our take
With the massive rise in sustainability-focused health products in the last few years, there are certain things we've grown to expect when it comes to brand messaging. As its name suggests, Liquid Death follows none of these unwritten rules - which is exactly why it’s getting noticed.
The company sells a range of canned mountain water beverages, pointing out that aluminum (though still single use) is much more easily recycled than plastic, while also donating a percentage of its profits to anti-plastic non-profits. However, it’s Liquid Death’s heavy metal style branding and aggressive messaging that force it to stand out.
Considering that the company sold over $3 million in merchandise alone in 2021, it’s safe to say that it’s been successful at generating hype. As for actual beverage sales, its place in major stores like 7-eleven, Whole Foods and Target suggests things are going well.
As one of the fastest-growing beverage brands the US has seen in recent times, it’ll be very interesting to see if Liquid Death can sustain its momentum. However, its emerging Unicorn status, investment from influential athletes, and partnerships with music festivals shows that its gaining pace.
