Who you are
- It is important that you speak Japanese and English fluently, you have a strong product mindset and can work independently across different teams and geographies
- We are looking for someone with a strong engineering background but do not expect there to be a significant amount of hands on coding
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- Native Japanese language
- Cross-cultural experience and strong communication skills
- The ability to confidently engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Partner facing experience across technical, product and business domains
- Good understanding of product globalisation
- 8+ years of experience building and deploying complex systems in collaboration with external partners
- Experience with modern web technologies: JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, HTML5
- Strong understanding of Client/Server architectures and scalable system design
- Platform development experience with Web, iOS and Android
- Cloud experience with AWS and specifically Lambdas

- As a Senior Partner Engineer, you'll lead strategic technical integrations, optimize deployment processes, and collaborate with key partners to deliver outstanding user experiences. You'll act as the technical point of contact for our partners, driving innovation and solving complex challenges with scalable, forward-thinking solutions
- In this high-impact role, you will specifically be working with a core partner, based in Japan, developing a new global product offering. This role will allow you to showcase a wide range of skills far beyond just technical expertise
- You’ll be pivotal in cross-functional work involving Product, Engineering, Editorial, Operations, Program Management, and Marketing
- Consolidate design and engineering patterns from SVOD where appropriate
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to optimise production workflows
- Ensure that technical quality is maintained in line with SVOD
- Work closely with internal feature teams for iOS, Android and Web to ensure feature parity and compatibility
- Communicate in native Japanese with our partner in Japan to ensure our partnership is efficient and productive
- Help drive globalisation and scaling from a technical perspective working closely with our partners, legal and product
- Identify, design and implement solutions outside of the core teams where appropriate
- You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager, Partner Engineering and must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a hybrid role with 3 days in the office
- The Partner Engineering team at Crunchyroll plays a pivotal role in enhancing and expanding our users' experiences. We collaborate extensively with a diverse network of partners to integrate, test, deploy, and improve the Crunchyroll streaming application, content discovery APIs, and billing integration APIs over the entire device lifecycle using Crunchyroll tools and data

In recent decades, anime - encompassing Japanese, Korean, and Chinese animation 0 has transitioned from a niche interest to a formidable industry, boasting a global market worth approximately $30B. Despite this growth, distribution has historically posed challenges, with series and films often reaching overseas audiences through disparate channels, if at all. Crunchyroll emerged to address this issue by consolidating the largest collection of anime into a single streaming service.
Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.75B expanded the platform's reach, integrating Sony's extensive animation library into its offerings. this move also positioned Crunchyroll for heightened competition against streaming giant Netflix, known for its substantial investments in anime production and acquisition. Currently, Crunchyroll maintains an unrivaled library of anime content, boasting over 44,000 episodes that have attracted over 0M paying subscribers.
While Crunchyroll initially offered a free, ad-supported tier to its vast community, it appears poised to phase out this option, transitioning to a subscription-based model for all new series. Despite this shift, the platform has implemented a global reduction in fees to stimulate subscription uptake. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but past experiences with companies like Hulu suggest that it may drive subscription growth and mitigate piracy
