Role
Who you are
- We are seeking a new Senior Data Engineer to lead on practices and development standards across our estate of cloud-hosted data engineering platforms. The successful candidate will bring:
- Demonstratable experience in a professional data engineering environment
- Demonstrable expertise in SQL, Python and preferably Databricks pipeline development
- Strong knowledge of software development life cycles and experience of establishing, enhancing and owning DevOps practices and methods
- A passion for continuous improvement
- Ability to communicate complexity in plain English and understand your audience
- A desire to constantly enhance our data engineering estate
- Demonstrable skills in applicable Azure resources (ADF, Azure Automation, Azure Functions)
- Experience of Databricks, PySpark, Delta Lake and DLT pipelines is highly desirable
What the job involves
- We are seeking a new Senior Data Engineer to lead on practices and development standards across our estate of cloud-hosted data engineering platforms.
- Maintaining/enhancing the quality of the team’s user stories for engineering solutions
- Acting as primary reviewer of pull requests into our code base
- Building and modifying existing data engineering solutions using Databricks, ADF, Power Platform, Azure Functions and PowerShell tooling
- Defining and improving our source code control practices
- Leading, as and when required, data-related projects, reporting outside the Data Engineering team
- Monitoring and troubleshooting batch ingestion pipelines using Azure Data Factory, SQL, and Databricks
- Supporting junior engineers in their design-thinking and implementation
- Identifying and recommending incremental improvements to data platforms
- Contributing to the success of the data engineering team by helping to improve its code, documentation, and development standards
- Participating in, and leading as required, the team’s agile rituals

Founded in 1974 to find bone marrow donors for people suffering with blood cancer, Anthony Nolan is today one of Britain's largest recruiters of stem cell donors, along with DKMS, the Welsh Blood Service and NHS Blood and Transplant. As only one in four people with blood cancer will find a compatible donor in their family, Anthony Nolan's work saves over 1,000 lives a year worldwide.
Aside from recruiting donors, Anthony Nolan conducts research through the Anthony Nolan Research Institute, with its findings reducing post-transplant complications and increasing quality of life for patients. It also maintains the UK's first dedicated cord blood bank which allows new mothers to donate their umbilical cords for research.
Despite significant advances in blood cancer tratment since Anthony Nolan's founding, there's still a critical shortage of donors, sworsened by a sharp declinesiunce 2019. To combat this, the charity is actively raising awareness of this issue and is also set to open a new stem cell donation centre at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham to further help address the gap.
