- Proven project management experience, with the ability to effectively prioritize and deliver on multiple initiatives
- Deep understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and processes
- Experience in engineering leadership roles across at multiple teams, including hiring, mentoring, and team development
- A strong track record of coaching and mentoring both individual contributors and peers
- Ability to influence and motivate teams to achieve their best performance
- Hands-on experience with scalable front-end and back-end applications
- Experience collaborating across time zones and geographies, with a flexible and adaptable working style
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to challenges
- Experience in a similar role in a high-tech environment
What the job involves
- We are looking for a self-sufficient, highly motivated Senior Software Engineering Manager to lead and maintain two products within the Turnitin Integrity portfolio
- As an Engineering Manager, you will work closely with Product Managers, Customer Success teams, and other Engineering teams across the globe, ensuring seamless collaboration
- One team is responsible for a product which is in maintenance phase - with a focus on optimization, efficiency, and continuous improvement
- The secondary team, is in a stage of growth and expansion
- This is a people-first leadership role, where you will manage individual contributors (ICs), provide feedback, mentor, coach, and support career development
- You'll oversee and manage two highly efficient engineering teams, ensuring they are aligned with company objectives and consistently deliver high-impact results
- Collaborate seamlessly with globally distributed engineering teams, product managers, and solution architects to drive alignment and innovation
- Provide hands-on leadership by setting clear, measurable goals, fostering accountability, and inspiring a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Take full responsibility for managing and supporting the individuals within your teams
- Build an environment where engineers feel valued, motivated, and empowered to perform at their best
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide constructive feedback to help team members grow their skills
- Actively promote team well-being, collaboration, and a culture of psychological safety
- Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders to define, develop, and implement best practices, ensuring efficient processes for delivery, architecture, and team operations
- Oversee technical roadmaps, delivery milestones, and deadlines, ensuring alignment with broader business goals
- Partner with cross-functional teams (Solution Architects, UX, Security, DevOps, Customer Success, Product Management) to deliver high-quality products on time, while addressing cross-departmental dependencies and challenges
- Act as a technical leader by offering architectural oversight and ensuring adherence to scalable, sustainable designs
- Strike the right balance between perfection and pragmatism, delivering high-quality software that is “well enough to ship” while ensuring maintainability and innovation
- Use quality metrics and development analytics to evaluate team performance and identify opportunities for optimization
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, tactfully and empathetically communicating areas where processes or practices can be refined to maximize efficiency and impact
- Stay up to date with the latest tools, frameworks, and development methodologies
- Proactively bring recommendations for change and innovation to leadership and the team, ensuring the organization remains at the cutting edge of technology and practices
- Foster an open, transparent team environment where feedback flows freely
- Actively communicate progress, decisions, and updates to stakeholders across the organization, ensuring alignment with the company’s vision and mission
- Take passionate ownership of the software your team builds, ensuring it aligns with business objectives and meets customer needs

- Build strong relationships with peers and collaborators across engineering, product, customer support, and sales teams

Our take
Turnitin has a global reputation for being one of the best plagiarism detection softwares on the market. It’s well-earned, too. Besides simple paraphrasing plagiarism, its software also employs sophisticated techniques like identifying macro replacement and analysing metadata to weed out essay mill papers.
Academic plagiarism has become increasingly complex over the years, exacerbated in part by the COVID period of online schooling, and in part by a skyrocketing rise in computer literacy and plagiarism tricks. Software like Turnitin is therefore playing an increasingly crucial role in maintaining academic integrity. Additionally, it helps understaffed institutions ease the burden placed on a teaching workforce which are, in some regions, perilously close to collapse.
Turnitin is not without its issues, however. Some institutions lean too heavily on the software, and essay mills have begun using Turnitin software to prove product authenticity. Historically, Turnitin has neatly addressed these problems by releasing new or improved capabilities including Chat GPT screening updates in 2023. If it can continue to demonstrate remarkable competence and proactive development in this regard, Turnitin’s glowing reputation seems assured.
