Who you are
- You’re a conceptually strong designer with a sharp visual eye and a track record of creating impactful work
- You balance craft with clarity, and you’re just as comfortable leading an idea as you are refining the layout
- Excellent typography, layout, and composition skills
- Strength in concept development and campaign thinking
- Experience art directing photo and video shoots
- The ability to present and pitch creative ideas to internal teams and stakeholders
- A collaborative mindset where you’re energized by working closely with writers, strategists, and producers
- 6+ years of experience in art direction or brand design, ideally in high-growth, creative-led environments
- A portfolio that shows both strong conceptual work and polished execution across channels
- A keen attention to detail and a high bar for creative quality
- Flexibility and focus - you’re comfortable shifting between fast-paced campaign work and deeper brand development projects
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
What the job involves
- As our Art Director, you’ll play a central role in shaping the visual expression of the Cleo brand. Partnering closely with our creative studio leaders and working alongside copywriters, designers, and marketers, you’ll craft bold, conceptually driven creative that cuts through and connects with our audience
- From campaign concepts to product visuals, you’ll bring a sharp eye, fresh thinking, and a deep commitment to storytelling through design
- Concepting & Executing Campaigns: Develop and deliver multi-channel visual campaigns across digital, social, and experiential
- Evolving the Brand: Contribute to the growth of Cleo’s visual identity, helping to push the brand forward while maintaining consistency
- Creative Collaboration: Work side-by-side with writers, product designers, and marketers to create cohesive, strategically grounded work
- Art Directing Production: Provide art direction across photo and video shoots to ensure output is aligned with brand standards and creative vision
- Maintaining Visual Standards: Uphold high levels of craft and consistency across everything you touch - from a social asset to a full-scale campaign
- Bringing New Ideas: Keep Cleo visually ahead of the curve, with an eye on emerging trends and platform innovation
Our take
People are increasingly not satisfied with the products being offered by traditional banks, which have proven slow to react to the needs of younger consumers who expect more from their everyday experiences.
Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers. And after a successful year in the US its now eyeing up a return to the UK.
Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.
Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
