Role
Who you are
- At least 4 years of commercial development experience, ideally in Python but will also consider TypeScript (deep JavaScript experience works too)
- Is comfortable coding on the frontend (JavaScript) even if it’s not where you spend most your day
- Fantastic communication skills; we are empowered engineers who manage our own projects as well as write code
- Critical thinking, attention to detail, thinking outside the box…we work very hard to stay out of the feature factory mindset
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an experienced software engineer to accelerate our roadmap; delivering more value for our members and making a real impact on the education sector
- As a Software Engineer at The Key you will join our small, yet empowered Engineering Team building and maintaining the SaaS platform our members subscribe to
- You can expect to work in cross functional teams with a mixture of Product, Design, Content and Marketing folk depending on the project
- You will manage your own time, tasks, priorities and keep internal stakeholders informed throughout the delivery process
- You will also be responsible for the delivery and quality of your own work through to production (we do not rely on Project Managers, Delivery Managers or QA folk to handle comms or testing)
- Own and deliver iterative solutions across the stack (frontend, backend, infra)
- Create short feedback loops with internal stakeholders
- Use Python and TypeScript to deliver solutions
- Have support from a team of peers
- We loosely follow the 6+2 week Shape Up approach for strategic planning and prioritisation; meaning we very rarely flip flop between initiatives allowing time to deliver high quality valuable work to our members
- Our Tech Stack:
- We are in the early stages of migrating several Python Django monolith apps to a microservices architecture built on top of Node, TypeScript, GraphQL and gRPC with detached TypeScript (React Next.js Monorepo) frontends
- 3 x CMS’s built on Python, Django and Wagtail
- Data exposed via a number of Django REST Framework endpoints
- Partial migration to a detached frontend (Vue.js Nuxt SSR & React Next.js)
- Partial migration to microservices exposed via a GraphQL Gateway (Python/Node gRPC and GraphQL)
- A Flutter native app
- Reasonable level of code coverage from tests but definitely more we can be doing here
- Codified deployments to Google Cloud Platform (Kubernetes)
- Continuous Integration server and pipeline (Github Actions)
- Whilst the direction of travel is to Node microservices we have lots (and lots) of existing Python code (Django and Microservices) to maintain and in many places further build on top of. Being able to move between and code in both languages is an essential part of the role
