Who you are
- We’re looking for a leader that can chase down the “why” and ensure their teams and those around them understand this well enough to make their own decisions
- We want to bring another leader into our group who both leans into ways to improve the system and drives value for the business through the system

- You thrive in articulating a clear vision that drives decisions downward. You ensure that a strategic north star is well understood, and empower teams to make informed choices that align with the broader goals of the business
- You identify gaps in understanding and chase down clarity. You proactively seek out ambiguities, facilitate discussions, and ensure that all stakeholders have the information they need to move forward with confidence
- You believe that pulling quality upstream starts with engineering. You champion best practices, encourage early testing and validation, and work closely with engineers to build a culture of quality from the ground up
- We want our engineering leaders to have the time to coach and enable growth for their engineers as well as the space to make thoughtful and impactful technical decisions
- We don’t require it for our leaders, but love those that have experience in or are interested in learning:
- Python, Java, Kotlin Multi-Platform, Compose Multi-Platform, AWS (including API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, Cloudwatch, EventBridge), Github Actions, and Snowflake

- Understand and innovate on the ways we can improve our system. You are able to hone in on gaps in quality, security, performance, and speed of execution and influence teams to raise those bars
- Operate with a first-team mindset. You don’t point to anyone else when a challenge arises that needs someone to step up. You realize when an important area is falling short and lean in to help
- Build stronger teams. You identify what people a team needs to be successful and then find creative ways to source and assess the right talent to help the team operate more effectively. You find passion in understanding a team member’s strengths and growth areas and building out their full potential
- Set clear expectations. You can pave the right path so the amazing individuals at Upside are able to lean into these expectations with their own autonomy, voice, and creativity. We surround ourselves with owners and want to let them do what they do best. Our leaders aim to help unlock and focus this potential in the best way possible to help our teams thrive
- We ask our managers to focus on a team of around 8 direct reports, while our more senior managers may operate across two teams
- The staffing for these reports is always split - we see incredible value from a mix of full-time and contract staff
Our take
Loyalty systems, vouchers, and other special offers have a proven track record at winning over new customers for businesses. However, customers can be reluctant to sign up due to the sheer number of these schemes. Upside exists to unify these loyalty schemes with a single flexible reward app.
While retail reward platforms are nothing new, Upside functions more like a marketplace, linking participating businesses to potential customers. It also rewards customers with cash back on eligible purchases, a more flexible reward than is traditional in loyalty schemes.
With over 50,000 businesses enrolled and 30 million app users, Upside has grown into a major player in this sector. The company is well-funded and ever-expanding its offering, with a product that is increasingly appreciated by consumers in an expensive world, as well as the businesses who depend on their custom.
