Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of infrastructure engineering experience with at least 3 years focused on security engineering or DevSecOps
- Have a passion for the reliability, scalability, and usability of what you make
- Have a history of fully owning your work, from designing and building to maintaining and being on-call
- Excellence in cross-team collaboration, with the ability to influence security practices without direct authority
- Strong incident response experience and ability to remain calm under pressure during security events
Desirable
- Experience with AWS or another cloud provider such as Azure or GCP
- Experience with at least one programming language such as Python, Go, Ruby, or Scala
- Experience working with container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes at scale
- Experience with highly technical architecture and driving outcomes with automation through Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Helm, and GitOps
- Experience in secrets management solutions (HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager)
- Strong knowledge of network security including VPC design, service mesh (Istio), and zero-trust networking
What the job involves
- As a Senior Infrastructure Security Engineer on the Foundation Team, you'll be the guardian of our platform—building security into every layer of our infrastructure while enabling teams to move fast and innovate fearlessly
- You'll balance security excellence with developer velocity, ensuring our platform remains both impenetrable and performant
- The Foundation Team is the backbone of Strava's engineering organization, providing the secure infrastructure, tools, and frameworks that power every feature our athletes love
- In this role, you'll embed security into the foundation of our platform—from hardening our Kubernetes clusters and cloud infrastructure to building automated security guardrails that make the secure path the easy path for developers
- Create and operate the infrastructure that makes Strava possible, from data stores and the container platform to observability software and deployment tooling
- Develop software that empowers your engineering colleagues, providing them the tools and platforms to deliver scalable, reliable, and observable products
- Find mentorship and growth opportunities with more experienced engineers on your team and beyond
- Demonstrating empathy for other engineers and thinking about how the platform enhances and enables their work
- Having an eye for detail and thoroughness, as you will work on the most important production systems at Strava
- Displaying ownership of your work by managing deployment and participating in an on-call rotation
Our take
Strava has created an online network where runners, swimmers and cyclists can record fitness activities, and compare and compete with their community. It offers both a free and premium subscription service with added features. The company also partners with local councils and urban planners who purchase valuable journey data from Strava which can be used to map out cities and develop safer cycle paths.
The platform helps members discover and plan workouts, as well as offering a leaderboard which is updated using GPS as users compete for the top spot on particular fitness segments.
With over 125 million athletes and growing, Strava released several new product rollouts in 2024, including an AI-enabled leaderboard. A partnership with the wearable fitness tracker Oura will mean Strava software is available on wearables, taking the company into fresh competition with the likes of Peloton and Apple. In 2025, the company secured new funding in a round led by Sequoia Capital, growing its value to $2.2 billion.
