Role
Who you are
- Minimum 4+ years of experience as a software product manager, ideally for a developer or operator-centric product, and 6+ years of experience in overall technical roles
- Proven track record building and managing enterprise-grade software—ideally in distributed data systems, streaming, or large-scale infrastructure—as an engineer, product manager, or solutions architect
- Demonstrated experience defining product specifications and user experiences across interfaces (API, CLI, GUI)
- Excellent written communication skills; strong ability to collaborate and lead initiatives across distributed, remote teams
- Deep technical understanding of stream processing systems, public/private/hybrid cloud infrastructure, security, and data governance
Desirable
- Experience in working with Open Source communities is a plus
- Basic coding experience is great to have!
- Familiarity with the Apache Flink and Apache Kafka and wider streaming ecosystems
What the job involves
- As part of Confluent’s mission to set data in motion, the Apache Flink® product management team owns both our fully-managed service for Apache Flink in the cloud as well as our self-managed stream processing offering, Confluent Platform for Apache Flink
- We are looking for an accomplished Staff Product Manager to drive the success of the Confluent Platform for Apache Flink product, who will define a strategic roadmap for this area, maintain a tight feedback loop with our customers and field organization, and work closely with our engineering teams
- Develop a strategic vision for Confluent Platform for Apache Flink, aligning to our overall vision for Confluent Platform on the one side and our cloud offering for Apache Flink on the other side
- Define and think through a great end-to-end product experience
- Translate our strategy into a roadmap to deliver that experience & value to our customers
- Partner with product marketing, technical field, and sales organizations to develop go-to-market plans, launch strategies, and compelling enablement for Confluent Platform for Apache Flink
- Engage regularly with customers, users, and internal stakeholders to surface pain points, discover opportunities, and continuously refine the product through an ongoing feedback loop
Our take
Confluent is a commercial company built on top of the open-source Apache Kafka project. Confluent and Kafka have developed a streaming data technology that processes massive amounts of information in real-time.
The streaming database technology was developed at LinkedIn as a way of moving massive amounts of messages. The company decided to open-source that tech in 2011, and Confluent launched as the commercial arm in 2014.
While the base open-source component remains available for free download, it doesn’t include the additional tooling the company has built to make it easier for enterprises to use Kafka. Confluent's value add is in those additional tools, including a cloud version of the product and a marketplace for sharing extensions to the platform.
Confluent expanded strategic partnerships with Microsoft and acquired Immerok, and in 2023 expanded its cloud platform. 2024 saw further product expansions with the launch of the Confluent Migration Accelerator, all exemplifying how the company is living up to its name by rocket-boosting the benefits of Apache Kafka integration for companies.
