Who you are
- The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, solid judgment, and an ability to dive into and take ownership of a matter.
- 6+ years’ legal experience
- JD/LLB or local law degree equivalent and admission to state bar or analogous governing body
- Broad litigation experience and a proven track record of managing complex litigation, with bonus points for substantively managing patent litigation and/or securities matters
- Ability to work with technical teams and translate technical concepts for legal purposes
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface effectively with all business functions throughout the organization and build strong relationships
- Proactive, dynamic, and result driven self starter with strong attention to detail
- Strong project management skills and ability to independently handle multiple matters simultaneously
- Familiarity working across the globe, to support multiple time zones and cultures, and previous experience in a remote work environment would be advantageous
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel, Litigation to manage a diverse portfolio of litigation matters.
- You will work closely with cross-functional teams and outside counsel to develop and execute litigation strategies and deliver practical legal guidance that aligns with our business objectives
- This role will work on and assist with all stages of litigation including pre-dispute engagement, initial case assessment, pleadings, factual investigation, discovery, motions, mediation, trial, appeal, and settlement
- Draft and review pleadings, discovery responses, motions, and briefs; prepare and defend company witnesses for depositions, hearings, and trials
- Partner with team members and stakeholders across GitLab to assess litigation risks and develop strategic approaches to dispute resolution
- Develop and implement litigation holds and manage document collection and production
- Manage outside counsel to ensure cost-effective and high-quality representation while within the litigation budget
- Monitor and analyze changes in the law and legal risks; propose creative and effective solutions to address those risks
- Develop and implement litigation avoidance best practices
- Advise on, draft, maintain and review templates and policies
- Oversee and improve internal processes and tools related to litigation
- The Legal Counsel job family is responsible for advising clients across GitLab on legal matters related to their functional area of expertise
