What the job involves
- The Products Team at Docker is looking for a Product Manager to help developers and development teams build, share, and run applications, in a fast-moving landscape
- You will own and drive the product area to ensure that Docker Desktop is the fastest, most flexible and most secure way to run containerised workloads
- You will help shape the future on key areas of the Docker developer and team experience
- You will partner with teams across Docker to identify new areas of opportunity for us to explore
- As the company grows, you will help to foster teams eager to continuously build, measure, and learn
- You own a product area, the long-term vision, the roadmap, the revenue, and the results
- You believe in and can articulate succinctly, our customers and their pain points
- You empathize and understand the world they live in and the constraints they work through
- You will engage deeply with developers and find amazing solutions that solve today's problems while optimizing for tomorrow's vision
- You enjoy building products that are easy to adopt and use. You have a keen design sensibility, and you are always looking for ways to improve the usability of your products
- You are comfortable with ambiguity and will guide product definition, feature prioritization, and scope, in concert with cross functional teams
- You’re a fan of iterative development, working with our customers as well as cross-functional teams to hypothesize, measure impact, and learn from previous releases to iterate on future roadmap plans
- What to expect in the first 30 days:
- Get to know Docker! Vision, mission, values
- Understand the teams and business unit’s mission
- Meet the team along with peers across the business unit and company
- Work closely with designers, researchers and engineers to get to know our user’s needs and current pain points
- Work with your Product leadership and team to review and create quarterly goals
- Understand your product’s roadmap and what data is available to make data driven decisions
- Begin discovery on what opportunities exist and start making some bets
- Write a Product requirements doc and identify the next steps to delivering on that
- What to expect in the first 90 days:
- Provide clarity of product vision to your team and how your team contributes to the overall success of the company and business unit
- Shape your team roadmap and vision in close collaboration with design and engineering peers
- Lead the definition of the team OKRs for the quarter and provide progress reports
- Understand the company’s and business unit’s product vision and how it relates to your team’s objectives
- Develop deep understanding of our developers and customers and why they love Docker
- What to expect in the first year:
- Have made system wide impact on Docker’s product while changing the lives of millions of developers
- Lead product initiatives across cross-functional teams to create value for our users
- Drive the long term direction of your product including contributions to ARR
Our take
Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.
Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.
Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product. It's also embarked on a series of acquisitions to bolster its business, with speculation mounting about its possible sale in the near future.
