What the job involves
- Reporting to: Principal Security Engineer, Security Controls Assurance
- As a Staff Security Engineer - Security Data Specialist, you will work closely with fellow security engineers to design, build, and deploy data solutions that drive organisation-wide security value
- Your solutions will enable product and service owners, engineering teams including security engineers to proactively identify hidden problems and patterns in data and use these insights to amplify weaknesses and drive improvements to coding hygiene and system architecture
- Help architect, design, and deploy new features, and functionality in a unified OVO security data platform to enable security engineers to optimise and automate cyber defence, attack surface and security controls assurance processes
- Stay up-to-date with the latest security data and AI trends, tools, and technologies to ensure the team’s technical approach is innovative
- Foster an inclusive team environment where everyone feels valued and excited to contribute
- Communicate optimally with collaborators to explain concepts and drive informed decision making
- Within your first 3 months month you’ll:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of our existing security data sources, data pipelines, warehouse, and security operations principles
- Contribute to the development and enhancing of our security data and AI model architectures
- Guide and educate other teams about effective security data and AI practices and opportunities

- Data automation and AI-enablement: Designs and implements robust automation and AI augmentation frameworks and tools (e.g. for threat detection, security finding and incident remediation and risk operations). Automates security playbooks , policies and guardrails in workflows, CI/CD and/or the IDE
- Secure development: Create and deliver automated assurance mechanisms against technical security guidance and configurations. Build and implement security audit points in digital services. Monitor secure coding and infrastructure patterns, automate policy enforcement and enable teams for secure provisioning
- Decision support and behaviour change: Strategically design security decision-making experiences and measure their impact. Use statistical analysis and human-centered design principles to build and test different ways of presenting information. Leads projects that aim to "de-bias" critical security processes, such as strategic planning or forecasting, by embedding data-driven checks and balances. Acts as a subject matter expert, advising other teams on how to structure their data and analysis to support optimal communication and decision-making
- Mentor Junior Engineers: Actively mentor associate and mid-level security engineers. Provide technical guidance on security and data concepts and tools, review their work (e.g. assessment reports, proposed controls), share knowledge and experience, and support their professional development within the team
- Community of Practice: Contribute to the security engineering Community of Practice (CoP) by leading discussions, sharing practices, offering firsthand experience to the wider community, engaging in knowledge exchange / cross-pollination to further your craft. Create content and and individually contribute to the stated successful outcomes for the CoP

It's analysing meter data to deliver easy, personalised actions, turning electric vehicles into power stations with clever chargers, and building energy-efficient heaters. In 2020, OVO completed the acquisition of SSE Energy Services' retail arm for £500 million, meaning that the challenger brand now has around 4 million customers in the UK.
While helping Ovo members halve their carbon footprints, the company is also working towards becoming a net zero carbon business by 2035. The challenges ahead for the company include encouraging consumer behaviour change, shifting towards subscription models for home energy use.
