Role
Who you are
- Knowledge of the tech stack and demonstrated proficiency in production environments
- Experience with Docker
- Experience automating a CI/CD pipeline
- Fluent in English and in French
- Desire to train junior developers and explain CI/CD and cloud tool
- Contribute to a rigorous data engineering culture
- Excellent communication skills, in both formal and informal settings, and in English and French
- Strong interest in climate issues (it’s not a hoax, many people suffer from it)
- Being comfortable to work alongside corporate insurers (some still wear suits 👔)
- Willingness to help junior developers (remember how you were when you started 💬)
- Strong team spirit and ability to work (you’ll have to review code and have your code reviewed)
- Rigorous, creative and meticulous mind (we handle large insurance, we take our time)
- Strong desire to learn (there’s no limitation to the tech used, we’re happy to test and learn new tools)
- Eagerness to work in a multi-cultural environment (policies and teams are from all around the world 🗺️)

What the job involves
- Due to our consistent growth, we are seeking to expand our Data, Software and DevOps team
- At the core of our company, as a DevOps Engineer your main assignments will be to make direct contributions to the CI/CD and setup cloud resources to release, deploy, maintain and run our climate risk models
- You will also have to provide support to data scientists and software engineers running and developing our models
- Your secondary mission will be to connect the external tools to automate the flow of information between the tech and business side

The corporate insurance market is undergoing a momentous shift driven by a changing climate, the growing impact of natural catastrophes, and a rise in emerging risks. Climate change has become a real risk to businesses - one Nature report, for example, found that the US alone could lose over $500 billion across 22 sectors if rising global temperature predictions materialise. The need for effective corporate insurance has never been higher.
Descartes Underwriting is looking to revolutionise how we approach insurance. Taking on one of the insurance industry’s traditional methods - catastrophe (CAT) risk modelling - Descartes is leveraging new data sources and fusing them with a host of AI algorithms. This provides what it describes as a “product offering which covers the full spectrum of natural catastrophes and emerging risk exposures.” Its AI-driven parametric insurance model is highly disruptive, and has proven highly successful - just a few years after its founding, Descartes had already become the leading InsurTech player worldwide.
Following major funding, Descartes is looking to scale up its approach to corporate and public entity risk exposures, growing its technology platform, expanding into new lines of business and targeting larger deals. With an existing client base spanning hundreds of corporations including a host of Fortune 500 companies, Descartes looks set for big things in the coming years.
