To fast-track the development of true fault tolerant quantum computers, and reach one million qubits and beyond by leveraging existing knowledge in device fabrication within the trillion-dollar silicon industry.

Quantum computing uses the properties of quantum particles – those of a sub-atomic size – to solve problems, with quantum computers having the potential to outperform all other computers to date. Quantum Motion aims to fast-track the development of fault tolerant quantum computers, towards creating them on a scale that can be employed to solve pressing problems in resource management, drug and material discovery, and a range of other fields.
As Quantum Motion puts it, “the most powerful computer on the planet hasn’t yet been built”, with current quantum computing systems not having the size to challenge classical computers in practical applications. However, by leveraging existing hardware knowledge within the silicon industry, the company has shown that a stable quantum qubit can be created on a silicon chip, giving it the blueprint to pursue creating a true fault tolerant quantum computer.
The UKRI’s National Quantum Technologies Programme provided the funds for Quantum Motion to launch a collaborative project, named “Altnaharra”, that brings together leaders in UK quantum research and partners including a world-leading supplier of cryogenic cooling equipment, that will be needed to make its chips. The company’s innovative research is peer-reviewed, with the results of its work lauded as a breakthrough for quantum computing.
