Who you are
- 5+ years experience in product management in consumer products
- Experience in consumer mobile or game development experience is preferred but not required
- Ability to build wire-frames, product specifications and white papers
- Experience with managing dynamic applications and multivariate testing
- Able to lead, motivate, and develop a team, including those who do not directly report to you
- Exceptional data analysis and problem solving skills. SQL querying abilities is a strong plus
- Strong project management skills and the ability to present work to the executive team
- A passion for games, creating fun and compelling user experiences
- Outstanding written/oral, organizational, analytical skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to provide clear direction, set measurable goals, and give insight on industry and competitor trends
- Consumer mobile or game development experience
- Experience in working with and coordinating large-scale projects with central teams
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Director of Product who can bring its games to the forefront of the industry: building unforgettable social experiences, connecting hundreds of millions of people throughout the world, and delighting their users through games
- Equipped with user data, you will have the freedom to provide experience, direction, and measurable performance to the game design process, building high-quality social games for millions
- Part of the Central Product Management (CPM), you will help multiple global teams manage the end-to-end lifecycle(s) of complex products spanning multiple feature areas
- This will involve writing and consulting on specs, overcoming design challenges and taking the lead for promoting interoperability and scale
- In addition, the Director of Product will drive the overall research strategy, driving the usage of core innovative game technology, and ensure that product decisions are based on in-depth data analysis
- Through strong customer empathy, the Director of Product will be responsible to develop deep insights into customer needs and how the roadmap addresses those needs
- You will drive strategy for the team in collaboration with leadership, provide management for CPM team members, and mentorship for PMs throughout the company
- You will provide oversight and guidance for more junior PMs on their projects and be a key stakeholder or owner for initiatives with other teams
- You will coordinate Product Managers across multiple products; they will work with their team to set clear/measurable objectives and ensure the team is effectively crafting project plans based on priorities, and ultimately driving positive business outcomes
- Lastly, the Director of Product will deliver their vision & strategy, monitor product progression and partner with central publishing teams and/or game teams for delivering initiatives
Our take
Zynga is a games developer that rode Facebook's platform to success back in the late noughties and early 2010's. It is now one of the biggest casual game producers globally, with a presence across 175 countries and regions and over 80 million monthly active users.
Though the company hit a number of roadblocks after its initial success - such as falling stock prices, and numerous calls it was copying other games - its subsequent resurgence is proof of its staying power. It continues to use social media as a distribution channel, and boasts titles such as FarmVille, Merge Dragons! and Words With Friends.
Future success will lie in the company's continued investment in building viral games that people love. It will also need to attune to the social media waves and keep track of where users can be found, as the landscape has become more mobile. Notable recent activity includes a collaboration with BBC Earth ahead of 2024's Earth day, and grant to develop actionable push notifications that enable gameplay without entering the application.
