Experience: 5+ years in software engineering with a focus on embedded systems, device software, or IoT solutions
Core Skills: Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python; strong hands-on experience developing software for hardware devices; familiarity with Linux and real-time systems

What the job involves

As the Senior Software Engineer - Device, you will shape Hayden AI’s hardware-integrated software systems, directly contributing to our mission of transforming urban mobility and public safety through edge device technology
In this role, you will architect, develop, and optimize software running on distributed hardware devices, ensuring robust, scalable, and high-performance solutions
You will report into Siyao, Device Engineering Manager, and work closely with cross-functional teams including Hardware Engineering, Product Management, and Field Operations
Design, implement, and maintain software for edge devices, ensuring seamless integration with hardware
Collaborate with hardware engineers to define system requirements and drive end-to-end feature delivery
Optimize system performance for reliability, security, and efficiency in real-world operational environments
Lead code reviews, establish software standards, and mentor junior engineers
Troubleshoot complex field issues, working with cross-functional teams to provide rapid solutions

Cities around the world are dealing with clogged bus lanes, blocked stops, and traffic violations that slow down public transit and put people at risk. It's a huge problem, but one that remains difficult to monitor or mitigate effectively.

Hayden AI is tackling this problem with its smart, bus-mounted cameras powered by AI. They automatically detect when vehicles block bus lanes or stops, helping cities gather real-time data and take action to improve safety and traffic flow.

Already in use in cities like New York, LA, Barcelona and Braga, it's a transformative idea that can keep buses moving and riders safe. The company has raised considerable funding and is growing fast, and in 2026 received approval to begin serving local authorities across the UK.
