Role
Who you are
- Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field like statistics, applied math, operations research or engineering
- 5+ years of experience in the ad tech space working on algorithms
- Proficiency in Python and SQL
- Working knowledge of the state-of-the-art ad tech algorithms and hands-on experience in foundational Ad Tech, digital media DS models used for forecasting, attribution, and relevance
- Understanding of applied statistics including sampling approaches, causal modeling, time series analysis, and data-mining techniques
- Experience with all stages of A/B testing, from design through setup to monitoring, analysis and making and implementing ship decisions
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate with cross-functional partners to build the business
- You must be able to work fast and independently, and possess excellent teamwork and communication skills
- The ideal candidate will also have an excitement for solving data-driven marketing problems and relevant experience in the ads space

- Data Scientists take on a variety of problems ranging from shaping critical business decisions to building algorithms that power our internal and external products. We’re looking for passionate, driven Data Scientists to take on some of the most impactful problems in our business
- For this role on Lyft Media, you will be working on one of the most profitable and fastest growing revenue centers in our company
- We are the team that brings delightful ad experiences in the Lyft app and in out-of-home displays such as tablets mounted behind driver seats or on displays mounted on the top of the cars
- We're looking for a motivated and results-oriented Data Scientist with experience in advertising to join our growing team! In this role, you will be responsible for implementing and deploying machine learning algorithms for digital ads
- Partner with other scientists and colleagues in the Lyft Media team to frame digital ads problems mathematically and within the business context
- Perform exploratory data analysis to gain a deeper understanding of problems
- Develop and fit statistical, machine learning, or optimization models
- Write production model code; collaborate with Software Engineers to implement algorithms in production
- Design and implement both simulated and live experiments
- Analyze experimental and observational data; communicate findings; facilitate launch decisions
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
