Seafood fraud is rife on a global scale: 36% of sampled seafood from restaurants, supermarkets, and fishmongers were found to be mislabelled. This reporting highlighted for many Americans the importance of having a trusted source for seafood - and for tens of thousands of Americans, that source is Wild Alaskan.
The company offers a direct-to-consumer membership service for sustainably sourced seafood. Consumers can pick the contents and frequency of their seafood boxes, which are then delivered and packed mostly with recyclable or biodegradable materials. It’s a familiar model for food subscription businesses (Crowd Cow, Meatable, Well Seasoned, the list goes on), and this means Wild Alaskan have plenty of direct competitors (Sena Sea, Oceanbox, Sizzlefish - again, the list goes on).
It seems, however, that the market is hot enough to sustain this crowded field - for now at least. The demand for high-quality, nutritious, and sustainable food has been steadily rising over recent years. Directly complementing that is the surge in demand for DTC subscription boxes. Wild Alaskan is therefore positioned well in a strong market.
