Role
Who you are
- 6-8 years' Product Design experience
- Bonus for Gusto if you’ve worked in domains connected to Benefits like healthcare, wellness, retirement or other financial planning
- A builder who loves being hands on crafting high quality, high impact solutions and getting them in front of customers
- Experience designing and shipping products in complex domains informed by research, data, and insights from support teams demonstrated through a portfolio of work you’ve directly contributed to
- Systems thinking, including using and contributing to a Design System and designing with a Platform-first approach
- Ability to explain the impact of your work, tradeoffs you’ve made, lessons learned, and design rationale
- The ability to think long term towards a broader vision or step change, while being able to speak to scoping and sequencing to deliver iterative value
- Experience balancing long-term design goals with an Agile-based iterative approach
- Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaborating across the entire company
- Experience designing end-to-end customer journeys from software to service
- Strong strategic partnership with the ability to help identify opportunities, refine problems and solutions, and help the team deliver great customer experiences
- Bonus for Gusto if you have experience flexing between the 0-1 space and more mature products
- Strong opinions loosely held and a willingness to engage in constructive debates about scope and tradeoffs to build alignment and unblock work

What the job involves
- The Benefits team builds solutions to help our customers navigate the complex landscape of benefits with ease. Our goal is to expand and enable access to quality health and financial benefits delivered through a seamless, integrated and guided platform
- As a design team, we craft simple, delightful product experiences that help customers untangle the complexity of these offerings and make informed decisions that directly impact their lives and livelihoods
- As a member of the Benefits team, you'll impact Gusto’s 300,000+ customers, taking ownership of key aspects of our Benefits product
- You’ll own the end-to-end design and vision for established products while exploring the future of financial and health benefits in a 0-1 space
- Work with cross-functional partners in Product Management, Engineering, and Data Science to understand customer problems, key opportunities in your domain, and define both the long term UX vision and also short term releases that unlock customer value
- Collaborate with our Research, Data Science, and Customer Support teams to build a holistic understand of customer needs, and make sure they’re shared with your teams to inform their thinking, build empathy, and inform prioritization decisions
- Design solutions that establish Gusto as a trusted expert advisor, empowering our customers to make confident and informed benefits decisions
- Advocate for great UX, inspiring your teams with a strong point of view about what’s possible and aspirational for your product areas and Gusto as a whole
- Hold high standards for the customer experience, including partnering with engineering partners to refine the end customer experience and ensure that what we release is bug free, performant, accessible, and responsive
- Speak clearly to tradeoffs and the “Why” behind design decisions in terms non-designers can understand and participate in
- Provide and seek feedback from other designers to always push the bar for quality
- You’ll drive team-wide impact through mentorship, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration
Our take
For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
