Proven software development experience with a focus on delivering business-aligned solutions in an Asset Management or Finance Technology environment

Strong understanding of DevOps tooling and code deployment
Solid foundation in SQL and Python
Exposure to Power Platform, including Power BI and Power Automate
Familiarity with Azure DevOps (or equivalent), CI/CD pipelines, and Agile delivery

What the job involves

As an Engineer (Business-Aligned Applications), you will be a member of the Development Chapter within the Asset Management Tribe, reporting to the Development Chapter Lead and working as part of a cross-functional team
This role is uniquely positioned at the intersection of technology and business, supporting rapid solution delivery for investment professionals, analysts, and operational teams
You will work with business stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver pragmatic, high-impact solutions in a fast-paced, Agile environment
This is a hands-on role that blends software engineering with analytical thinking and problem-solving
You will be expected to work across a diverse technology stack - including Python, APIs, Power BI, and low-code tools - to build and iterate on solutions that drive real business outcomes
As an engineer, you will help foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation
You will be empowered to take ownership of problems, propose creative solutions, and deliver working software quickly and iteratively
Design, develop, and maintain business-aligned applications and services that support investment operations, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability
Build and support data integration and transformation pipelines using tools such as Azure Data Factory, SQL, and Power Platform, and work across a broad and evolving technology stack, adapting quickly to new tools and platforms as needed
Collaborate directly with business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver rapid, fit-for-purpose solutions in an Agile environment
Develop lightweight applications, scripts, and dashboards using Python, Power BI, and other low-code/no-code tools to support operational and analytical needs
Support data analysis and reporting initiatives by building queries, visualisations, and automation pipelines, ensuring solutions are well-documented, observable, and production-ready, with appropriate logging and monitoring in place
Apply engineering best practices, including test automation, CI/CD pipelines, and secure coding standards, and participate in code reviews, pair programming, and collaborative problem-solving
Explore and apply AI-assisted development tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot) to improve engineering efficiency and solution quality and drive continuous improvement in development tools, processes, and team ways of working

Our take

Abrdn, formerly known as Standard Life Aberdeen, is a global investment company helping its clients to save and invest for their futures. It operates three businesses - Investments, Adviser and Personal - and has been operating since way back in 1825.

Nowadays, atop its investment and advice services, the company delivers two platforms for financial advisers. The first, Wrap, enables users to build and manage portfolios for each client. It also includes SIPP drawdown capabilities - which means advisers can choose the best platform charges when client assets are at their highest. The second, Elevate, encompasses a suite of tools for advisers to save time and make sure their clients are informed.

In 2023, Abrdn announced "adviserOS", which represents an upgrade to their platform offerings. There is limited information to go on, but the company claims this new venture will be simpler and data-led, as well as require less admin. It will be interesting to see if this new release keeps pace with tech developments across the investment space and allows abrdn to continue as an innovator.
