Role
Who you are
- This role requires a high level of technical proficiency and a strong understanding of software development best practices
- Strong alignment with our values, find our values on our career page if you haven’t read up on them yet
- You are proficient in English (spoken, written, and reading) at a CEFR Level C2 / ILR Level 5
- 6+ years experience working as a back-end engineer on complex web applications
- Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails, MySQL/Postgresql
- Familiarity with frontend, ReactJS and TypeScript is a plus
- A desire to work in an environment which values speed of iteration and individual autonomy, while also embracing personal accountability and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a dynamic team
- Motivation to understand the business, our users, their requirements, and to then deliver results based on a thorough understanding
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with a certain level of ambiguity
- Adaptable with the ability to change direction quickly if necessary
- Familiar with agile software development principles
- Should be able to lead a complex project end to end with judgment and attention to detail when it comes to architectural, product, design, and process decisions; your judgment should inspire a high level of trust within the team
- Experience working on a fully distributed remote team

- Experience with Elasticsearch / Sidekiq / Kafka / GraphQL
- Previous experience working with community platforms

What the job involves
- We're looking for a Senior Back-end Engineer to join our Circle Plus team as we aim to make Circle the top choice for creator/brand-led communities
- You'll be working on features related our Mobile App (specially white label) and help support our Public APIs
- In this role, you will partake in all stages of the development lifecycle, from initial task definition to final deployment
- As a senior engineer, you'll break down large epics into actionable tasks, follow through with development and testing, review PRs, push updates to production, and gradually release behind feature flags
- Your responsibilities will also include bug-fixing and continuous improvement of the codebase
- Work autonomously on a product built in Ruby on Rails backend and React/React-Native front-end
- Build critical features and improvements for our web app, with a product-first mindset
- Work closely with Circle's leaders throughout the feature design process
- Work closely with our designers to create a world-class user experience
- Foster a bias for action, prioritizing speed of iteration without compromising on the quality of code or user experience
Our take
The influencer market is nearly twice the size it was globally back in 2019. With more creators flocking to the digital space to grow and engage with their followers, cracks in the existing platforms’ relationship to their content creators are showing. Circle is one of a number of content creator platforms rising up to meet the demand for change.
Its community platform allows users to create and engage with their own groups, for a small subscription fee established by the creators. This direct ownership and community engagement is proving something of a silver bullet for companies looking to tempt creators off of incumbent giants like Tiktok and Youtube. Companies like Substack, Patreon, and Pico have all seen remarkable success with this strategy, suggesting that Circle’s foray into establishing something similar for a creator hub is playing to an eager market.
The company's ultimate aim is to pull together all creator tools like newsletter publishing, merch sales, and podcasting under a single Circle umbrella. This is ambitious - but Circle is growing alongside the creator economy at an impressive pace. If it can maintain this growth, it will be poised well for future success.
