Role
Who you are
- You have proven commercial experience in building large customer-facing applications, ideally using Python
- Understand the technical challenges of building large customer-facing applications in fast paced environments
- Experience with building scalable and robust micro-services with good observability
- Experience building within resilient backend services with Message Queues
- You’ve used infrastructure as code with AWS, Google or a similar cloud provider - we use GCP with Terraform
Desirable
- You’re familiar with the notion of deploying quickly and often, with different layers of testing and rolling features out gradually - using modern deployment pipelines to do so
- You work well in a team, as well as independently, and have a willingness to learn and grow
- You understand why good pre implementation design is important before diving into code
- You’re able to communicate efficiently across different functional departments
- You excel at taking ownership of projects, working in multidisciplinary teams on impactful work
- You’re able to adapt and learn quickly. We’re still an early startup and as such we are still finding the best processes that suit us. Things might change!
What the job involves
- Joining our Backend Engineering team, you’ll directly work on features that better our members’ experience of engaging with their pet insurance as well as providing the core experience required for our excellent customer operations team to help our members
- Alongside the best talent, you’ll work in our Growth squad to continue driving our mission to provide pet insurance and pet services to our members
Salary benchmarks
Our take
High claims and a small market have traditionally made pet insurance an unappealing option for big insurers. With household pet ownership ballooning in the UK over the pandemic, however, that market is growing, and a flurry of startups are cropping up to cash in. Napo is a relatively young entrant to the scene, offering a comprehensive platform of low-excess insurance and wellbeing services for British pet-owners.
Pet insurance customers are a different and a more discerning breed to, for example, car insurance customers. Providers need to court pet-owners with a more comprehensive suite of coverage, including advertising costs and rewards for missing pets, and bereavement counselling. Napo ticks all these boxes, but they are rapidly becoming an industry standard in a way that requires more to stand out.
Trupanion, for example, are investing in high-tech streamlining solutions to help facilitate scaling without service quality taking a hit. And the larger, better established pet insurtech, Bought by Many, recently won a hefty sum in the pet industry’s largest VC investment deal. Napo have a friendly brand, and are entering into a growing market, but will have to adapt fast to keep pace.
