Who you are
- Demonstrable experience in quality engineering, preferably with a background in both large industrial manufacturing and startup environments
- Strong understanding of quality management systems, supplier quality management, and continuous improvement methodologies
- Proficiency in quality tools such as FMEA, SPC, DOE, and Lean Six Sigma
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead root cause analysis and drive corrective actions
- Highly adaptable and proactive, with a strong focus on delivering results
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality
- Innovative mindset with a passion for improving processes and driving efficiency
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of managing relationships and negotiating with external partners and internal stakeholders

What the job involves
- Join Shellworks as a Quality Engineer and help us materialise a better future by eliminating plastic pollution
- Design, implement and own a scalable Quality Management System (QMS) tailored to a startup environment, ensuring it supports rapid growth and flexibility and is delivered to the appropriate cost, quality and timing
- Implement and oversee quality control processes at partner facilities, including incoming material inspections, in-process checks, AQLs, and supplier audits (requires travel across UK, Europe and ROW)
- Be the first point of contact and lead root cause analysis for any quality issues or non-conformances identified, working closely with production partners to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and ensure that all quality issues are resolved promptly and that lessons learned are applied to prevent recurrence
- Define, design and implement test methods and appropriate controls across the value chain to ensure products continue to delight our customers
- Work in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment with a talented and passionate team

Our take
Single use plastic has become an overwhelming environmental problem. Hundreds of millions of million metric tonnes of plastic are produced every year, and the vast majority of this is not recycled. Shellworks is setting out to provide a solution by using bacteria found in soil and marine environments to create alternative compostable vegan packaging, which performs like plastic until it is disposed.
The company is currently focused on addressing the beauty and personal care industry. Its new material, Vivomer, can be broken down in any natural environment and can be used for products like cream containers, lipstick applicators, and serum dispensers. This has attracted conscious and luxury brands, including BYBI, Liha, and Sana Jardin.
Having raised seed funding in 2022, Shellworks is now focused on hiring for its operational, science, and product teams, as well as investing in tech innovation and expanding its platform of materials.
