Who you are
- The ideal candidate will have basic experience analyzing numbers, manipulating data in spreadsheets, and summarizing data in text format
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in marketing, economics, psychology, or other discipline that includes a quantitative component
- 1+ years experience in a data-driven role or an advanced degree (e.g. MBA)
- Able to maintain balance in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and comfortable with vaguely defined objectives that may change without notice
- Ability to interpret data and use text and/or visual displays to illustrate concepts
- Familiar with syndicated data sources (e.g. Comscore, Mintel, Tubular Labs) and extracting data from YouTube Analytics, Google Analytics, and Megaphone
- Willing to learn survey writing, survey programming, and survey data analysis
- Excel, PowerPoint, Word and/or Google Suite proficiency
- Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, creativity and critical thinking skills
- High attention to detail, organized, and comfortable with large data sets
What the job involves
- The Marketing & Sales Research team is hiring an Analyst to create data-driven narratives that position Vox Media as a premium publisher
- The Analyst will create data-driven stories, track trends in their designated verticals, and conduct surveys with the goal of showcasing the quality of Vox Media’s audience while simultaneously demonstrating our in-depth industry knowledge
- The Analyst works closely with internal stakeholders in Sales, Marketing, and Editorial to fulfill their insights needs and provide solid evidence in support of their stories and sales proposals
- The Analyst uses sources such as Comscore, Google Analytics, and internal custom surveys to weave narratives about the Vox Media audience within their designated consumer verticals
- The Analyst also uses available data to answer miscellaneous business questions, prepare professional-looking reports, write summaries of market trends, and present research findings to internal stakeholders
- The candidate needs the ability to think creatively about data and how to apply it to create a story
- The candidate must be patient and willing to support internal stakeholders in their search for the perfect number that could motivate clients to partner with Vox Media
- Become the go-to for insights in your designated verticals (i.e. beauty, retail, CPG)
- Prepare narratives tailored to internal stakeholders needs in an environment requiring short turnaround times
- Conduct surveys of the Vox Media audience including writing questionnaires, programming surveys, analyzing study results, and ensuring the results are presented in a relevant manner to internal stakeholders
- Combine third-party and internal survey data to highlight new and emerging consumer trends and sentiments that may better position Vox Media to its clients
Our take
Whilst magazines and newspapers are not as popular as they once were, digital journalism is alive and well. However, many people feel that digital content is becoming less natural and informative, and instead has become focused on sensationalism and ‘click-bait’ as a means of advertising.
Vox Media publishes media across various digital platforms, focussing on providing insightful and informative journalism through storytelling, commentary, and cultural conversation. Whilst the company's editorial networks are meant for entertainment purposes, they do this through a means that increases awareness and interest of affiliate brands. Generally, their digital content aims to lead readers to subscribe to a podcast, click a link, or purchase a product.
Marketing through digital publishing is nothing new, but Vox Media has approached this with an interesting perspective by focussing on producing content that inspires a reader to follow up on a brand, as opposed to being suggested to do so. This helps the content remain natural and legitimate, as opposed to feeling spammy and pushy. With numerous acquisitions at its back, and a recent and substantial investment in the company, Vox Media will continue scaling its existing brands and operations, as well as securing the resources to continue its ascent into the future.
