Who you are
- This role requires vision, systems-level thinking, and the ability to inspire teams to execute at a high bar of design excellence
- 10+ years of experience in UX/product design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design leadership
- Experience shaping strategy and executing across multiple platforms (web, mobile, responsive)

What the job involves
- As a Principal UX Designer, you’ll play a pivotal role in defining the end-to-end experience across Opendoor’s products and services
- You’ll be a craft leader and thought partner to product, engineering, research, and business stakeholders—pushing the boundaries of design to deliver experiences that are both delightful and impactful
- Elevate the quality of design thinking, craft, and execution across the team by owning and driving operating mechanisms like design reviews and customer experience reviews
- Mentor and coach more junior designers and help them develop and grow as they progress in their career
- Provide input and support to the VP of Design on recruiting and hiring, talent development, and team culture
- Lead design vision and strategy for complex, high-impact initiatives across Opendoor’s customer and partner experiences
- Drive clarity in ambiguous problem spaces and simplify complexity into elegant solutions
- Partner with product managers, engineers, researchers, and data scientists to align business goals with user needs
- Set a high standard for craft, usability, and accessibility across the design team
- Mentor and coach designers, providing feedback and guidance that raises the bar across the org
- Influence product strategy with user-centered insights, advocating for design thinking at the leadership level
- Contribute to the evolution of Opendoor’s design system, ensuring consistency and scalability across products
- Represent design in executive-level forums, driving alignment around customer experience outcomes
Our take
Opendoor makes selling homes easy and stress-free by cutting out the prolonged processing time usually involved with a sale. Sellers can offload a house quickly and easily to the company for cash and a 6-9% fee. Currently operating in a growing number of markets nationwide, Opendoor has chimed well with millennials who gel quickly with online businesses that offer solutions to problems they encounter.
This buying and selling model doesn't come without risk. The longer Opendoor keeps a property, the lower its profit margin. However, Opendoor's performance has been anything but disappointing; it went public in 2021, with its pre-SPAC merger presentation calling for $3.5 billion in revenue. Its actual revenue trounced it, coming in at $8 billion - more than double its estimate.
Opendoor's largest competitor Zillow dropped out of the space in late 2021 because it struggled to price the homes it acquired accurately. Opendoor's closest remaining competitor is Offerpad, which does just a fraction of the transaction volume that Opendoor does. With strong earnings coming out of 2024, if Opendoor can continue to ride on this success long term it will have an enormous lead on existing and future competitors, giving it a shot to become the overwhelming market leader.
