Role
Who you are
- 4+ years experience building server side and data processing systems
- Deep understanding of distributed systems principles with a proven ability to deliver scalable, reliable backend systems
- A commitment to writing robust, testable, and production-ready code
- Strong understanding of cloud-native technologies (e.g., AWS, GCP, Kubernetes)
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience writing and maintaining production-level software in C++ or Go
Desirable
- Domain experience with geospatial data, mapping systems, or high-throughput data pipelines
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Software Engineer to partner with our Mapping Infrastructure Team. Our team manages infrastructure for Aurora’s “static map” (the Aurora Atlas) and Aurora’s “dynamic map” (the Fleet Intelligence system)
- The Atlas is a versioned mapping system that supports continuous editing and periodic vehicle release process
- This system allows massive validation and simulation batch workflows to ensure that our vehicles can safely navigate the world
- The Atlas powers many key functions, from map update processes, test creation systems, offboard simulations, visualizations, and onboard perception and decision making
- This system needs to scale dramatically to support aggressive map expansion targets
- The Fleet Share system delivers dynamic data to vehicles continuously
- This system ensures rapid delivery of critical data to our Fleet including: unexpected signs, weather events, and map anomalies detected by vehicles in our fleet
- This system needs to scale to the 10’s of thousands of vehicles projected in the next couple of years
- This role is ideal for those who are energized by challenging problems at the intersection of scalable backend systems, data versioning, and cross team collaborations
- Design, develop, and maintain the scalable backend infrastructure and data processing pipeline for storing and serving map data as we onboard the Aurora Driver to more commercial routes
- Establish and maintain robust testing and performance optimization practices to ensure the stability and scalability of the Atlas system
- Partner closely with internal and external customers to influence existing and future designs and features
Our take
The trucking industry is facing growing pressure from driver shortages, rising delivery demand, and the need for safer, more efficient freight transport. Long highway routes are expensive and tiring for drivers, especially on repetitive trips so companies are looking for new ways to move goods faster and more reliably while keeping costs low and improving safety.
Aurora Innovations is developing self-driving technology for long-haul trucks through its "Aurora Driver" system. Already, the company is operating autonomous freight routes across Texas and nearby states, often handling the highway portion of deliveries while human drivers complete local drop-offs. On top of this, the company is partnering with major companies like McLane, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, and Hirschbach to bring autonomous trucking into real commercial use.
In an exciting move, Aurora is now going beyond testing and into large-scale operations. McLane has approved driverless freight runs between Dallas and Houston, while Volvo and Aurora have expanded autonomous deliveries into Oklahoma City. With plans to scale routes across the US and agreements for hundreds of future autonomous trucks, Aurora is gearing up to play a very powerful position in autonomous freight transport.
