Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of industry experience building software in a production environment
- Proficient in C++ and Python using modern best practices
- Graduate level degree in CS/Robotics/EE
- Deep knowledge of state estimation theory and practice (one or more of sensor fusion, Kalman Filtering, non-linear estimation, SLAM)
- Experience in estimation and modeling with sensor data (lidar, IMU, radar, camera)
- Deep understanding in relevant areas of mathematics, including spatial transforms, linear algebra, probabilistic estimation
Desirable
- Prior experience in robotics or autonomous vehicle applications
- Prior experience with ML solutions and/or GPU development
What the job involves

- The Localization team is responsible for the software that safely and accurately estimates positioning for the vehicles in the Aurora fleet
- This involves processing high-rate data from a diverse suite of sensors in order to provide real-time, high-precision measurements of the location and motion of vehicles traveling on highways, surface streets, and endpoint facilities
- We are searching for a Senior Software Engineer to join us in solving these technical challenges
- Design, implement, and maintain solutions for estimating the pose of vehicles and other assets, such as trailers
- Rigorously evaluate and test solutions to verify the safety and efficiency of the localization system
- Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders on partner teams to solve problems of high importance to Aurora products
Our take
In spite of emerging from stealth mode in 2018, Aurora is making strong waves in the flurry of startups racing to develop fully autonomous vehicles. Aurora’s hardware and software developments have historically focused on self-driving trucks, which it expects to launch commercially in 2024.
It recently named Ossa Fisher as its new President, who will focus on scaling operations ahead of this commercial launch. Passenger cars and associated services are expected to roll out following this launch. However, the self-driving industry is riddled with unmet deadlines, cash shortfalls, and tough technological challenges.
To remain competitive with deep-pocket industry giants like Tesla and Google’s Waymo, the company continues to land substantial backing from the likes of Sequoia Capital, accelerating its post-IPO growth. The pedigree of its founders may well continue to win over investor confidence. It boasts leading prior positions in the self-driving divisions of Tesla, Uber, and Google.
