Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of corporate taxation, SEC reporting requirements, and the complexities tax issues associated with our business needs to go in the present and the future, and be a relationship builder to collaborate across all business functions at Zūm
- 10+ years of tax experience in public accounting and corporate tax at public companies
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred
- Expertise in ASC 740, corporate tax planning, and compliance in a public company environment
- Strong understanding of SEC reporting requirements and tax implications
- Proven ability to manage complex tax projects and lead cross-functional initiatives
- Familiarity with SOX compliance and public company internal controls
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing business needs
- Leadership experience with a track record of developing team members
What the job involves
- Reporting to our VP, Controller, the Tax Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, planning, and strategy for a rapidly evolving corporate environment
- Oversee the preparation and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns to make sure they comply with applicable laws and regulations
- Manage income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740, including tax footnote disclosures for SEC filings
- Verify accuracy and timeliness in the preparation of tax-related disclosures for financial statements
- Stay updated on changes in current and proposed tax laws and analyze their impact on the company
- Enhance tax process efficiency through the use of tax technology tools
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve tax readiness for SOX compliance and public company reporting
- Support the required SEC documentation related to taxation
- Implement processes and controls to maintain compliance with public company tax obligations
- Develop and execute tax strategies to optimize the company’s tax position while maintaining compliance with evolving tax laws
- Provide strategic tax guidance on business initiatives and expansion
- Identify and manage risks and opportunities related to federal, state, and local tax legislation and regulatory changes
- Develop a high-performing tax team, providing mentorship and growth opportunities
- Collaborate closely with Finance, Legal, and external service providers
- Serve as the main contact for external auditors and tax authorities
Our take
The largest mass transit system in the US is student transportation, and it’s more than double the size of all others combined. It’s rife with inefficiencies, however: circuitous routes mean many students are spending more time travelling and less time sleeping, exercising, or participating in enrichment activities, affecting student outcomes and inequalities.
Zum is looking to overhaul school transport with the help of cloud computing and AI. It has a central hub from which it manages route planning and vehicle assignments across 4,000 areas and school districts in California, meaning fleet deployment, maintenance, and operational efficiency can be optimized. It also offers cameras and tracking in vehicles, and is committed to having a fully electric, 10,000-strong bus fleet by 2025.
It's an ambitious plan, but it’s clear that the US school busing system is in dire need of an overhaul. We’re seeing startups like Via offer a similar service to NY schools, gathering similarly strong momentum. With Zum fast approaching Unicorn status, and its California roll-out continuing without a hitch, it appears, for now, to be leading the modern student transportation startup pack.
