Who you are
- We’re looking for someone with well-honed communications skills and the ability to build effective relationships within a complex stakeholder environment
- You’ll be passionate about Wellcome’s mission, and well versed in using storytelling to build emotional connection with an audience
- Well-honed communications skills, developed through previous experience in a busy internal communications team
- An ability to build rapport and to influence diverse range of stakeholders at all levels, including senior staff
- An ability to handle complex and sensitive information, exercising discretion in communication
- Comfort in managing projects and working in a matrixed organisation
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Internal Communications Manager to join our dedicated team responsible for engaging and inspiring colleagues with our mission and vision, creating a sense of belonging, inclusion and pride in working for Wellcome
- In this role, you’ll partner with key teams across the organisation to advise them how to use effective internal communications to support their strategic goals
- You’ll create and deliver multi-channel plans aimed at Wellcome’s employees, helping them to connect with and become advocates for our mission, strategy, and culture
- As Internal Communications Manager, you will:
- Create, plan and deliver timely and effective communications to Wellcome employees, using a blend of digital and non-digital channels to maximise impact
- Provide strategic communications advice and support to key teams across Wellcome, including on complex and sensitive topics
- Use evaluation and insight to develop effective communications, and to inform continuous improvement across the internal communications team
- Work effectively across Corporate Affairs to align internal communications with external, as part of a matrixed working environment
- Champion accessibility and inclusivity in the design and delivery of communications

The Wellcome Trust was originally founded in 1936 to fund medical research and has since grown into the UK’s largest private scientific research fund, and one of the wealthiest charities in the world. Disbursing over £1 billion in funds a year, it has provided funding to numerous medical research projects in its focus areas of mental health, climate & health and infectious diseases. These include the Cancer Genome Project and the Ebola Emergency Initiative.
Wellcome's recent decision to divest itself of its shares in fossil fuels has also relieved it of a persistent source of controversy, as this was potentially hindering the credibility of its climate change research. Wellcome has since partnered with the World Economic Forum to collect data on how climate change is affecting health worldwide.
The company is also moving to adjust to a more global role. The majority of its funding has historically been allocated to UK firms, but as climate change and infectious diseases know no borders, neither does research into solutions to these problems. ln 2019 it established an office in Berlin to strengthen its scientific links in the EU and to allow it to more easily fund important research outside of the UK.
