Who you are

Proven experience leading cloud engineering teams or chapters in a modern engineering organisation
Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure, including networking, identity, compute, storage, and platform services
Strong background in infrastructure as code (e.g., Bicep, Terraform), CI/CD pipelines, and automation tooling
Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), serverless architectures, and event-driven systems
Solid understanding of cloud security, governance, and cost optimisation strategies
Passion for mentoring and developing engineers, with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style
Familiarity with modern software engineering practices and DevOps culture
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, agile environment with cross-functional teams

What the job involves

At Aberdeen Adviser, we are building a modern, scalable technology platform that empowers financial advisers to serve their clients more efficiently
Our engineering organisation is structured into squads and chapters, enabling deep technical leadership and cross-squad alignment. Our Cloud Engineering chapter is central to enabling secure, scalable, and resilient cloud-native solutions across our platform
As a Cloud Lead, you will be the chapter lead for our Cloud Engineering discipline, responsible for setting the technical direction, standards, and best practices across multiple squads. You will guide and mentor cloud engineers, foster a strong engineering culture, and ensure our cloud infrastructure and platform capabilities are robust, secure, and future-ready
You’ll work closely with Engineering Leads, Quality Engineers, and Product Managers to ensure our cloud strategy supports business goals and enables rapid, reliable delivery of customer value. Your expertise in Microsoft Azure, infrastructure as code, and cloud-native patterns will be instrumental in shaping our platform’s evolution
Lead the Cloud Engineering chapter, providing technical direction, coaching, and career development for cloud engineers across squads
Define and evolve cloud architecture standards, ensuring scalable, secure, and cost-effective solutions on Microsoft Azure
Champion infrastructure as code, CI/CD automation, and observability practices across the engineering organisation
Collaborate with Engineering Leads and Architects to align cloud capabilities with product and platform needs
Drive adoption of cloud-native services, serverless computing, and container orchestration to improve agility and resilience
Promote secure-by-design principles and ensure compliance with regulatory and security requirements
Stay ahead of emerging cloud technologies and trends, evaluating their potential impact and applicability
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence within the chapter

Abrdn, formerly known as Standard Life Aberdeen, is a global investment company helping its clients to save and invest for their futures. It operates three businesses - Investments, Adviser and Personal - and has been operating since way back in 1825.

Nowadays, atop its investment and advice services, the company delivers two platforms for financial advisers. The first, Wrap, enables users to build and manage portfolios for each client. It also includes SIPP drawdown capabilities - which means advisers can choose the best platform charges when client assets are at their highest. The second, Elevate, encompasses a suite of tools for advisers to save time and make sure their clients are informed.

In 2023, Abrdn announced "adviserOS", which represents an upgrade to their platform offerings. There is limited information to go on, but the company claims this new venture will be simpler and data-led, as well as require less admin. It will be interesting to see if this new release keeps pace with tech developments across the investment space and allows abrdn to continue as an innovator.
