Role
Who you are
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 3+ years of software engineering experience in production environments
- Hands-on experience with Python and/or Go
- Familiarity with datastores such as Dynamo DB and cloud-based environments such as AWS
- Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming and foundational CS concepts (data structures, algorithms)
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join the Rider Experience team within Lyft Urban Solutions
- Your work will directly power the digital experiences behind our bike-share and scooter-share platforms
- You'll build the backend systems that make membership programs, rider features, and real-time experiences feel seamless and fast
- We're moving quickly on this hire; the team has ambitious goals for 2026 and needs strong engineers who are ready to ship
- Our engineers are sharp, pragmatic problem-solvers who move fast and deploy to production continuously
- Engineering & Delivery:
- Take independent ownership of high-impact features and small projects, driving them from early design through launch and iteration
- Own components within our systems, responsible for their development, deployment, operation, and maintenance
- Write reliable, performant, maintainable, and scalable code, and contribute to ongoing improvements in code structure, tooling, and technical debt reduction
- Ensure comprehensive testing for your features, including unit and end-to-end tests, with an eye toward overall system impact
- Write technical specs, runbooks, and documentation that address requirements, security, and privacy considerations; contribute to team onboarding docs and norms
- Operations & Quality:
- Rotate on-call, monitoring deployed code for stability and performance, proactively fixing bugs, and keeping dashboards and alerts up to date
- Support and escalate production incidents as needed, and contribute improvements to on-call practices and long-term reliability
- Technical Collaboration:
- Partner closely with product, data science, analytics, and operations teams to move fast without breaking things
- Communicate technical trade-offs clearly, to engineers and non-engineers alike
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions, and take the lead with support as needed
- Accurately scope and estimate tasks and features; engage in roadmapping discussions and contribute feedback
- Partner with product, design, TPM, QA, and other cross-functional teams where applicable
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialled and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app, whilst the acquisition of European competitor Freenow could add 6 million new riders to its platform in 2026.
