Who you are

Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Graphic Design, Interaction Design, or a related field
3–5+ years of professional experience in UI design for web, mobile, or embedded applications
Proficiency in Figma for delivering complete design experiences
Strong portfolio showcasing clean, intuitive interfaces and thoughtful interaction design
Understanding and experience with design systems, component libraries, and responsive design principles

Desirable

Background in game design, habit-forming applications, health or fitness applications
Understanding of accessibility standards including WCAG 2.1/2.2 and Section 508, and their application to interfaces designed for users with limited mobility or motor control. Familiarity with ADA compliance is a plus
Knowledge of the Apple product ecosystem, including Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) and Apple’s accessibility standards

What the job involves

As a UI/UX Designer on our Product team, you will play a key role in shaping the user experience of novel brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. We are looking for candidates with experience in intuitive interface design, design systems, and human-centered design who are excited to bring their skills to a mission-driven environment
You will get to invent, iterate, and implement novel designs in a field that are still being defined. You will help build something no one has built before, designing experiences that enable new forms of interaction and unlocking greater independence for users
Design elegant, intuitive interfaces for Synchron’s groundbreaking brain-computer interface (BCI) platform, empowering users with limited mobility
Create wireframes, user flows, and visual interface designs for polished UI that scale across devices and contexts
Contribute to a cohesive cross-platform design system that supports both rapid prototyping and long-term product evolution
Partner with R&D and clinical teams as a key member of the product team to bring your designs to life in real-world applications
Champion accessibility, designing experiences that are inclusive, empowering, and compliant with WCAG and other standards
Use Figma to drive the full design process, from exploration to final assets and documentation
Participate in user research and feedback loops to continuously refine and elevate the user experience
Help define the visual and interaction language for novel input methods and interaction paradigms
Occasionally support broader design needs across the company, such as, but not limited to, presentation decks or marketing materials

Our take

Brain-machine interfaces have long been a technological dream, shouldering hope of bringing communication and movement to paralysed people. However, the need to drill into a patient’s skull in order to deliver these interfaces had held back advancements in the field for years.

Synchron, founded in 2016, is the first company to propose a safer delivery method via the jugular vein. Its proposition does not require heavily invasive surgery, and the interfaces may be used in a wide range of paralysis cases. The intended result is the ability to send texts and emails, and access online services such as health appointments and banking, all with the power of thought.

The company’s technology earned FDA approval in 2021, with its work backed by top research institutes in the field. Synchron has hopes that its final showpiece may be whole-brain data transfer, but for now, its focus on giving communication to the millions of paralysis patients in the world represents a market opportunity in the tens of billions
