Role
Who you are
- Foundational Coding Skills: 8+ years of experience and proficiency in at least one modern programming language. Go experience is a plus but not required—we'll teach you. Java, Kotlin or Python backgrounds translate well
- Database & Infrastructure: 3+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.) Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and understands the database internals and reliability (MySQL)
- Backend development: 8+ years software development experience building highly scalable, highly available applications. Experience developing, documenting, and supporting REST APIs
- Collaborative Mindset: A genuine interest in team-centric engineering practices. You should be comfortable (or eager to become comfortable) working in a mob programming environment the majority of the day, writing test-driven code, and sharing system ownership
- Problem Solving: A critical thinker who enjoys troubleshooting complex technical problems and wants to understand how large-scale systems maintain stability and scale
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions, participate in group discussions, and think out loud with your team
- AI tools: 1+ year professional experience leveraging AI to improve personal productivity in service of building complex SaaS feature sets
- Education: A BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical industry experience)
- US Work Eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis
What the job involves
- The Solution Lifecycle team is looking for a curious, growth-minded Senior Software Engineer II to work on building the next generation of our platform while tackling meaningful distributed systems challenges alongside a talented engineering team
- You will collaborate closely with product managers and fellow engineers through code reviews and architectural discussions, and you will have the opportunity to mentor other engineers
- You will also work on the core infrastructure of Smartsheet, focusing on the reliability, stability, and scale of our foundational systems
- This role is a great fit for someone with a strong background of hands-on development, experience in working on Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and has solid technical leadership experience
- This team practices mob programming for the majority of the workday
- We operate through collective code ownership, meaning you'll be collaborating in real-time with teammates most of the time—not working solo on isolated tasks
- We focus on building high-quality software while adhering to rigorous operational best practices
- If you are passionate about continuous learning and ready to dive into the core foundation of our platform, we want to hear from you
- Build Next-Generation Backend Services: Design and build scalable back-end services for Smartsheet's next-generation applications, solving complex distributed systems challenges while partnering closely with product management and other key stakeholders
- Contribute to Core Infrastructure: Help build and maintain the core infrastructure that serves as the backbone for Smartsheet. Maintain and scale a robust environment that ensures the foundational reliability, stability, and performance expected by all of our users
- Contribute to Database & Infrastructure Reliability: Dive deep into system internals. With team support, you will contribute to managing and upgrading large-scale database infrastructure, maintaining complex replication topologies, and automating core operations using AWS, Golang, MySQL, Terraform, Temporal, and GitLab-CI
- Collaborate via Mob Programming: Work closely with the team every day in a real-time development environment. Actively participate as both a driver and a navigator, asking questions, sharing ideas, and contributing directly to the team's collective code ownership.Take part in code reviews and architectural discussions as you work with other software engineers and product managers
- Practice High-Quality Engineering: Use Test-Driven Development (TDD) to ensure our foundational systems are resilient before they ever touch production. Beyond the code, you will be an active participant in our team book clubs and psychologically safe retrospectives to help continuously elevate how we work
- Use AI tools: Actively use AI tools to improve personal and team efficiency across coding, testing, design, and troubleshooting, exploring AI integration opportunities within team processes and features, and coaching others on effective AI use
- Participate in On-Call Rotations: Share responsibility for operational health of our systems as part of a supportive on-call rotation. You'll be ramped in gradually with experienced teammates available to help
Our take
With teams increasingly moving to remote work across many industries, companies have been reaching for tools to keep operations smooth and communications open. Founded in 2005, Smartsheet is a cloud-based work management platform helping a vast range of companies, from small businesses to large enterprises, plan, track, and report on work.
Like other team collaboration software companies, such as Lucid and Atlassian, Smartsheet saw strong growth in the early 2020s and achieved 17% year-on-year revenue increases through 2025. If the company can maintain this success, it stands to make real gains in a global team collaboration market expected to be worth about $20 billion by 2028.
Smartsheet has embedded itself across various industries, with deep integrations with applications from the likes of Salesforce, Atlassian, Google, and Microsoft, making it the first work management sector Unicorn to reach $1 billion in recurring annual revenue in 2024. Thanks to its successes, it was bought by Blackstone and Vista Equity Partners for $8.4 billion in 2025 with an eye on further international scaling, leveraging the reach of its new parent companies.
