Role
Who you are
- 8-10 years of experience building and delivering software products
- 1-2 years of experience as a manager
- A working knowledge of building native mobile applications on iOS and/or AndroidExperience building native mobile applications on at least one major mobile platform
- Experience collaborating with designers, product managers, and other engineering leaders
- A history of growing teams and building leaders
- You are experienced in leading, coaching and mentoring software development teams that deliver stable, high quality software
- You know what a highly functional engineering team looks like and how to grow leaders that can develop them
- You have a technical background, are able to contribute to planning and design discussions, and believe in building teams and practices that scale
- You can motivate and instill a strong sense of ownership and pride in your teams and managers. You know and care about software engineering best practices; perhaps a little too much
- You can work with Product and other stakeholders to deliver quick results while also driving longer-term initiatives
- You can plan and deliver a roadmap, and grow leaders that can do the same
- You are known for clear and succinct communication, and are able to represent your team to all audiences. You are an empathetic manager that enjoys working with people and deeply cares about growing people and their careers
What the job involves
- Our Mobile Engineering organization plays a pivotal role in enhancing the experience of our 2 million subscribers through our Everand and Scribd mobile apps, each of which is available on both iOS and Android platforms
- Reporting to our Senior Manager for Mobile Engineering, you will manage a cross-platform team of mobile engineers (iOS and Android), with accountability for their career development as well as the success of their projects
- In addition, you will collaborate with the Senior Manager and other engineering leaders on engineering excellence, in particular around quality, performance, and engineering velocity
- You will collaborate with the Senior Manager and the mobile engineers on how to modernize our technology and manage technical debt, and with our product design and product management teams on how to continuously improve the experience of our users
- Manage, coach and mentor your ICs by having regular 1:1s and building strong relationships
- Enable them to be self aware by providing genuine feedback
- Inculcate industry standard software engineering best practices across your teams
- Collaborate with recruiters to hire and build a diverse team of talented engineers that are meeting the growing business needs
- Remove obstacles in execution by effective communication, leadership and lean processes
- Ensure our mobile engineers are building a platform in the best ways, with the best tools
- Ensure the mobile engineers are demonstrating ownership and accountability on their platforms stability, observability, delivery & incident response
- Contribute to build tooling and developer productivity

The world's biggest site for social reading and publishing, Scribd's website has over 250 million unique visitors each month and a vast content library, consisting of over 200 million audiobooks, magazines, ebooks and newspapers as well as media created by the Scribd community.
While Scribd is the largest social reading site, it is not alone in offering this kind of media. It competes against some major players, the largest of which are Amazon's Kindle and Audible offerings, but also includes the likes of BookMate and the non-profit Internet Archive. Where it stands aside is in its feature-rich reader and the sheer diversity of its library, which, thanks to partnerships with several major publishers, features numerous popular titles as well as a range of independent creators.
Further differentiating it from competitors, the company taken a firm stand on social issues, in particular the recent wave of book bannings taking place across the United States. By making the banned titles freely available it hopes to do its part in preserving literary freedom. With this tendency showing no signs of slowing down, Scribd's intervention in this area could prove to be important.
