Role
Who you are
- 3+ years experience building personalized search and recommendation engines, ideally in the eCommerce context
- 3+ years experience as an engineering leader mentoring and growing successful teams
- A bias towards action, with the ability to make the tradeoffs between delivering outcomes and making things perfect
- A strong interest in the business problems we are solving, and empty with our customers
- A desire to build a diverse team that wins together and prioritizes success
- Significant experience in applying different architecture patterns like microservices, event-driven systems, micro frontends, etc
- Adept at developing in one or more common programming languages such as Go, Java, and/or JavaScript
- Being a good listener, but can also effectively communicate their perspective
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and able to deal with change
- Highly self-driven, professional personality with an aspiration to excel in your role
- Capable of taking both a helicopter view of things to get the big picture and also getting into details when it is appropriate to do so
- Business fluency in English

- Our engineering organisation makes sure that Flink delivers the best in class service to our customers
- In the Search & Recommendations & Ad Tech pod, you build the core user experience that lets our customers find the right products in the most efficient and convenient way and ensure a highly contextual and seamless shopping experience
- Build and grow the cross-functional engineering team that is responsible for the search, recommendations, and ad tech engine at Flink
- Make a direct impact on the Flink business by blending organic search results, recommendations, and sponsored content to enhance user discovery of our products on Flink, helping users find what they seek and delighting them with new, previously unseen products
- Apply pragmatic solutions, find the right tradeoffs and seek to reduce complexity to help teams deliver solutions that meet the needs of the business
- Work closely with your Product Manager to ensure actionable and valuable work is defined for the team
- Drive external and internal hiring across multiple disciplines, develop our engineering talent into the leaders of the future, establish a feedback culture within the team, manage performance of team members and make sure that we retain our top engineering talent
- Translate the product and business vision into a technological strategy and architecture for your team, and then work together to execute this vision
- Own the end-to-end delivery of software (you build it, you own it), including team ownership of monitoring and incident management of production issues
- Keep product and engineering quality high and continuously identify and resolve technical debt, quality issues, and gaps in engineering practices
- Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices and help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
- Create a healthy culture of collaboration and inclusion, lead by example in line with the engineering and company values
- Focus on applying best-in-class industry practices to continue to raise the bar on providing developer delight and speed of delivery for the teams
Our take
Online grocery delivery services in Europe range from early supermarket-specific services to the more recent success of mobile food-ordering applications. However despite thier proliferation grocery delivery services still face long waiting lists and logistic bottlenecks, with faster solutions coming with a compromise on the range and quality of products.
Flink provides an online website and mobile application for the delivery of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other organic-quality groceries to European homes. The company provides its services to 100 different European cities across Germany, the Netherlands and France, and claims that its grocery deliveries are provided at supermarket prices within 10 minutes of ordering.
Flink is one of the few remaining independent grocery delivery startups in Europe, with most of the others either having been acquired or shut down. German rival Gorillas for instance ate through its initial investments and was taken over in 2022. Flink has been playing a more conservative strategy, aiming for more steady growth, but had to receive a fresh investment round of 100 million euros in 2024 to help it outlast competitors. Rumors of a potential merger with competitor companies indicate the lengths that Flink is going to maintain its dominance in a market that, at present, is suffering from lower demand and higher costs.
