Role
Who you are
- Experienced developing applications using Python, SQL and Linux
- Strong understanding of software integration with embedded systems and engineering of complex electromechanical systems
- Have a knack for creative solutions to difficult real world problems
- Ready to take features from initial concept through design and implementation
- Experience with robotics and Linux
- Bonus: experience working in manufacturing
What the job involves
- Software is at the center of our product development, as it bridges the transition from digital models to beautiful physical form in 3D printing
- In addition to the software we ship to our customers, there is software everywhere behind the scenes at Formlabs
- We have custom tools that allow our engineers to study and improve printer performance, as well as for calibration, manufacturing, and data analysis
- As a python software intern, you’ll work at the intersection of hardware and software, developing critical functionality that enables us to build the best professional 3D printers on the market

- Internship Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 through December 18, 2026)
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours/week)
- Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA (in-person)
- Develop and maintain advanced software tools to support calibration, validation, and rigorous testing of electromechanical and robotic systems across our product lines
- Manage requirements and set expectations with cross-functional teams—including hardware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers—to deliver testing solutions successfully and on time
- Perform hardware modifications to printers and test setups to facilitate experimental processes
- Own the full lifecycle of the test tools ecosystem, including design, validation, documentation, deployment, and ongoing maintenance
- Use data science to analyze production lines and provide insights to the operations organization
- Continuously improve our development and deployment processes to streamline software releases across our global factories
Our take
Formlabs' founders met at MIT in 2011, and set about creating a company that would disrupt the 3D printing market. While the majority of the industry was experiencing a crash, Formlabs managed to buck the trend by implementing additive manufacturing (stereolithography) to a desktop form factor.
While many 3D printing manufacturers have tried in vain to market their hardware to home users, Formlabs has maintained a laser-sharp focus on serving the needs of professionals and large-scale companies such as Coke and Sony. Striving to keep costs low while maintaining an optimal user experience, the company has sold well over 100,000 printers.
With considerable funding at its back, Formlabs has continued to develop new solutions such as a series of mass manufacturing solutions that enable its customers to dramatically increase their 3D printing output. As the largest supplier of professional SLA and SLS 3D printers in the world, the company is well set to further its position and achieve further global growth.
