Who you are
- Graduated from a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD program in Computer Science, or a related technical field
- Good knowledge of data structures and algorithms and proficiency in at least one of these languages: JavaScript, C, C++, Python, Go
- Self-motivated and able to drive projects with mentorship and project requirements
- Smart, humble, and empathetic and ability to work effectively in teams and strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ready to make an IMPACT -- Driven and excited about the challenges of a fast-paced, innovative, and quickly growing software development environment
- Interested in building large scale distributed systems
- Experience building web applications for applications
- Experience with JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3

What the job involves
- We are looking for a Front-End Software Engineer interested in building engaging and insightful products for managing and visualizing large scale distributed real-time data streams
- Data flow is central to how companies operate, and we aim to make that experience intuitive and attractive
- As a Front-End Software Engineer, you will be responsible for creating new visualizations and interfaces that scale with Apache Kafka
- Your role will be a hybrid working model that introduces you to Confluent's culture and enables faster learning, onboarding, and coaching
- In this position, you will build engaging and insightful products for managing and visualizing large scale distributed data streams, make data flow intuitive and attractive, and build client-side web applications for data-intensive applications
- Build new features using advanced knowledge based on user requirements and make revisions to features based on feedback
- Build platform as a service (PaaS) product
- Take user requirements and vet the application program interface (API) contracts and user interface (UI) wireframes against them
- Work with backend software engineers to understand the API contract and ensure the user experience is not degraded due to performance constraints from the backend APIs
- Work with designers to understand and build components styling, from interactions to specification
- Work with product managers to build a user experience
- Build out a test plan and get sign-off from all stakeholders once development and testing has been completed
- Write, monitor, and manage large scale system deployments
- Triage Cloud incidents and monitor errors from Confluent's Javascript monitoring service
- Triage bugs and troubleshoot production issues
- Participate in the code review processes
- Write tooling to improve day-to-day workflows

- Our Cloud UI stack is written in Typescript and built based on React
- The UI connects to multiple REST and GraphQL APIs
- We unit test our code with Jest
- We deploy the UI to production every day, with the ability to test each and every commit in production (even PRs) before it goes live
- Feature flags unblock us from coordinating releases with backend teams
- Bots keep all of our dependencies up to date
Application process
- During the first year of employment, all Software Engineers globally will be required to participate in the SWE Onboarding program and go into their Confluent office 2-3 days (days to be determined) per week
Our take
Confluent is a commercial company built on top of the open-source Apache Kafka project. Confluent and Kafka have developed a streaming data technology that processes massive amounts of information in real-time.
The streaming database technology was developed at LinkedIn as a way of moving massive amounts of messages. The company decided to open-source that tech in 2011, and Confluent launched as the commercial arm in 2014.
While the base open-source component remains available for free download, it doesn’t include the additional tooling the company has built to make it easier for enterprises to use Kafka. Confluent's value add is in those additional tools, including a cloud version of the product and a marketplace for sharing extensions to the platform.
Confluent expanded strategic partnerships with Microsoft and acquired Immerok, and in 2023 expanded its cloud platform. 2024 saw further product expansions with the launch of the Confluent Migration Accelerator, all exemplifying how the company is living up to its name by rocket-boosting the benefits of Apache Kafka integration for companies.
