Who you are

- In addition to expertise in causal inference and econometrics, we are looking for a person who is organised, practical, good at managing stakeholders, and has a strong track record of delivery
- We’re looking for someone experienced in trial design, analysis, and implementation—ideally in a multi-partner context; strong communication skills, stakeholder management, and experience working within commercial (not just academic) timelines are essential

- Experience working in energy is beneficial but not required
- Experience setting up and analysing quasi-experimental designs
What the job involves
- We are looking for an Economist, Data Scientist, or Behavioural Scientist to join our Trials and Analysis team at the Centre for Net Zero (CNZ) for a 6-month fixed-term contract
- The Trials and Analysis team leads the design and delivery of field trials and quasi-experimental analyses, in collaboration with a range of delivery partners from the Octopus Energy Group and outside it
- The role we’re looking for will lead the trial design and analysis of a randomised control trial (RCT) with Octopus Electroverse
- This high-profile project will involve the design, implementation, and analysis of the field trial with Octopus Electroverse and possibly other partners, such as local authorities or distribution network operators
- You’ll be supported by other researchers in CNZ’s Trials and Analysis team, the team Director, and our Chief Economist
- Additionally, you’ll work closely with a CNZ project manager, who will assist in partner liaison and ensure adherence to the pre-analysis plan
- Finally, you'll collaborate with CNZ’s external affairs team to deliver high-quality reporting on the analyses
- Trial design: Designing the field trial and drafting a pre-analysis plan, in compliance with requirements from the funder of this work
- Implementation: Working closely with a project manager on our team to help Octopus Electroverse deliver the trial in a way that maintains fidelity to the pre-analysis plan and enables rigorous analysis once complete
- Analysis: Leading the analyses of this trial, and helping structure these analyses to turn them into high quality reporting
- Reporting: Leading the write-up of these analyses into accessible, policy-facing materials
- Partner engagement: Liaising with partners, managing and coordinating implementation across partners, and communicating updates to key partners and external stakeholders

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and now supplies energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract, so they can leave at any time, to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. It aims to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of its tariffs use 100% green electricity, while being cheaper than competitors' non-green tariffs.
Its continually creating innovative new products too. For example, Octopus Tracker, where prices change daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile, where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges the company faces is that its products are more complex than its competitors, given that it uses 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. Because of this, it's exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
