Who you are
- Knowledge of AWS products and services
- Systems engineering experience, working with software, hardware, networking, operating systems
- Proficient driving operational best practices and leading the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence
- Proficient troubleshooting and anticipating problems that affect the performance, reliability, or availability of software systems
- Experience in building production software
Desirable
- Experience with any combination of the following: threat modeling, secure coding, identity management and authentication, software development, cryptography, system administration and network security
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Experience programming in Python, Ruby, Go, Swift, Java, .Net, C++ or similar object oriented language
- Experience working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts requiring work from multiple team members
What the job involves
- Our team is looking for a highly motivated Software Development Manager (SDM) to lead a team of Software Developers and Systems Development Engineers in Amazon Security who will raise the security bar by delivering industry-best security services
- You should be somebody who enjoys inventing and simplifying around complex security challenges, obsesses over the customer experience, and feels strongly about delivering results
- You should be passionate about solving security hurdles in innovative ways
- We do not desire to simply produce good software here at Amazon Security.
- We want to produce disruptive, industry-leading innovations
- Each day, hundreds of thousands of developers and customers make billions of transactions worldwide on our cloud and the Amazon retail site
- The Amazon Security team owns security for all of these services offered by Amazon Security, including EC2, S3, and many others, as well as the security of our global retail sites
- This team is an EU-based Operations team, integrated with Software Development teams, supporting Amazon Foundational Security Services, to provide our customers with secure by default security services
- We dive deep into security technologies such as new access control design patterns, identity security services, access control, authorization, authentication, and life cycle management to support our customers as Amazon continues to scale and grow
- We are looking for software professionals from diverse backgrounds, who are creative problem solvers, and passionate about delivering solutions that improve both user experience and security

Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, and is well-known for its disruption of well-established industries. The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.
More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.
Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
