Who you are
- 2+ years experience in a leadership position
- 5+ years of experience as a software developer
- Deep understanding of data streaming (Kafka and/or Flink)
- Understanding of what it takes to build high performing teams and to retain talent
- A proven background in successfully-delivered software solutions, best testing practices and deployment techniques
- A genuine interest in open source technologies and technical challenges
- Experience working in agile and fast-growing tech start-up / scale-up

- We are hiring an engineering manager in our Data Streaming domain. The domain works on Apache Kafka and our own fork, Inkless, containing an implementation of KIP-1150
- The main tasks of the teams include:
- Improving Apache Kafka
- Innovating Apache Kafka with KIP-1150 (among others)
- Operating our Apache Kafka fleet
- Creating and maintaining ecosystem tools like Connectors and Schema Registry
- In the team you will be working with the engineers reporting to you, with a product owner and the leadership team, to build the future of Aiven
- What You'll Do:
- Be accountable for the delivery of the team (quality, risk management, operational impact, architecture, security, reliability)
- Maintain a healthy prioritization balance within the team backlog (like features vs tech debt)
- Drive the continuous improvement of the team’s way of working and their delivery flow
- Attract exceptional and diverse talent, influence the people planning and recruiting approach
- Support each team member to get to their full potential: from onboarding to personal development plans
- Manage expectations, individual and team performance by providing clear goals and feedback
- Ensure appropriate communication and collaboration within and outside the team

Our take
Cloud computing presents massive implications for the way businesses use data, with cloud-based databases ensuring high uptime, frictionless scalability, and simple software integrations. Aiven provides an open-source cloud data management platform, allowing users to easily set up cloud databases, access cloud tool integrations, automate data infrastructural management, and control data security within a single platform. The platform integrates directly into open source data services such as Apache Kafka and OpenSearch, supports multi-cloud deployments, and includes built-in compliance, encryption, and end-to-end security features. In 2023, it added AI-powered data optimisation capabilities via its integration of EverSQL's engine into its products.
Whilst various companies are tackling the difficulties of setting up cloud databases, Aiven has smartly taken more of an all-in-one approach, tackling everything from the building and managing of databases to software integrations, multi-cloud hosting, and security. The company claims that its cloud data solutions can massively reduce the amount of time, money, and resources that businesses must spend to migrate to cloud-based data infrastructure.
