Role
Who you are
- Strong coding and system design skills in Python or another language used in web scale data and AI applications
- SQL proficiency with a strong grasp of distributed processing principles, including data and machine learning (e.g. Spark, Dask)
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective explanation of technical concepts to both technical and business audiences
- Proven ability to establish practical standards and mentor junior machine learning engineers
- Eagerness to learn and apply emerging Large Language Model (LLM) technologies to product innovation
- Experience with established AI frameworks (e.g., MLFlow, Tensorflow, PyTorch), data orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Prefect), and an understanding of how to manage distributed data processing workloads (e.g., AWS EMR) are highly valued
What the job involves
- Working within the Data & Science team, you will join a diverse, globally distributed team of scientists, engineers, product managers, and analysts who help Xero turn data into beautiful, insightful products
- ML engineers design and build the infrastructure and services that power AI products that serve millions of customers every day
- They also work closely with Applied Scientists through the research and development process to create harnesses and interfaces to safely take models from research to production environments
- As a Senior ML Engineer, you will lead delivery programs that push the boundaries of what's possible with today's technology
- Lead the design of our AI research and production infrastructure and services, ensuring that our services scale while preserving flexibility for research teams
- Own our strategy for managing the growth rate of technical debt and costs across our stack
- Make sure we're solving the right problems with the right methods
- Share knowledge with colleagues and lift the bar for the AI Products team
- Mentor and develop members of your team, increasing our capability to build and operate intelligent, data-driven products and services in our core customer offerings
- Work with teams across Xero to improve the quality and usability of data

It has a strong rival in Intuit QuickBooks, which offers similar services, but competes by being most effective for growing startups, and having an incredibly simple user experience.
A series of acquisitions and partnerships, including the purchase of Instafile in 2018, have consolidated Xero’s market share. The company continues to add new integrations, such as with Vehocheck Workshop Manager, and the 2023 launched Beautiful Business Fund that will help small businesses accelerate growth.
