Who you are
- German and English language skills
- A relevant degree or the equivalent professional qualifications and at least 5 years of experience
- A wide range of technical skills within a customs compliance advisory function, including experience of reducing customs duties embedded in a business and improving governance and controls around customs compliance
- Experience working in a commercial environment in a role across international markets, ideally with a retail focus
- Experience of dealing with customs authority enquiries and audits
- First class communication skills and the ability to resolve conflicting interests by working within and across different teams, understanding and managing those teams’ different priorities and expectations. We are looking for a real team player
- A proven ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet tight deadlines

What the job involves
- The Customs Compliance Manager will be part of the global tax and customs team, focussing on ensuring ASOS is compliant from a European customs compliance and risk management perspective
- The role’s purpose is to support the business on identifying and complying with customs requirements as it continues to grow, together with managing the risks associated with our European import and export processes, including dealing with customs authority audits and ensuring compliance with legislative change
- The role will work within a team (approximately 4) to deliver the customs agenda and will work closely with the other tax teams (tax transformation, indirect tax, direct tax and employment tax) to ensure joined up business support is provided
- Additionally, this role will work closely with the broader finance team as well as supply chain, operational customs, delivery solutions and logistics
- Managing the Customs function in our German fulfilment centre in relation to a wide range of Customs projects, issues and opportunities arising within the EU
- Acting as the Customs Representative for ASOS in Germany, building strong relationships with German Customs
- Identifying and managing European customs risks, identify cash savings opportunities, and lead initiative(s) to mitigate risks or realise opportunities
- Dealing with communication and queries from German and other European customs authorities, including building relationships with key contacts
- Work with the business to understand and support the many new business initiatives and associated change impacts from requirements through to successful implementation to ensure continued compliance
- Obtain and maintain all authorisations and simplifications that ASOS may reasonably adopt including AEO and customs warehousing, and ensuring appropriate compliance checks and ongoing governance processes are carried out
- Build effective relationships with 3rd party suppliers and other retailers to ensure that ASOS is at the leading edge of customs compliance and able to effectively manage its supply chain from a duty perspective

Founded in 2000, ASOS initially meant 'AsSeenOnScreen' - the initial model being sales of imitations of clothing and accessories seen in movies. Now, the website sells over 850 brands, as well as its own ranges, and ships across the UK, US and EU. Priding itself on keeping up with the latest fashion trends, ASOS is aimed primarily at young people.
Since its foundation, ASOS has seen almost continuous growth. Whilst part of this comes from its ability to keep up with trends, much of its success has arisen from impressive use of digital marketing. Its mobile app, launched in 2018, has allowed it to expand across multiple online platforms.
It is well known that the fashion industry has been under huge pressure over the last few years. But ASOS' model has allowed it to dodge issues faced by competitors. ASOS' UK factories, for example, allow it to keep producing items which are up to date with trends; all whilst other brands must wait for international deliveries.
Over the last 20 years, ASOS has built itself into a fashion giant. The company appears to have the potential to emerge unscathed from the economic pressures currently affecting other players in the industry, and continue to capture value into the future.
