Who you are

Proven work experience in building a database product
Extensive experience in Linux/Unix administration
Production-level experience of Docker and container orchestration and micro-services architecture
Experience of container orchestration technology (e.g. Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform) a major plus
Experience of TiKV a major plus
Experience of distributed systems, load balancing, and system monitoring
Experience of Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud
Excellent communication ability
Analytical and multi-tasking skills
Willingness to adapt to remote work and collaborate with a remote workforce operating in different time zones

What the job involves

SurrealDB is looking for a talented Senior Platform Engineer
This promises to be an exciting role, with responsibility for building and shaping an industry-changing database product
Operating in London or remotely, you will have the skills and inspiration to push the boundaries of what is possible to achieve with SurrealDB Cloud’s goals
You will work on building, improving, and supporting the world’s fastest-growing open-source database-as-a-service platform and supporting the community as we grow
Build, orchestrate, and maintain a DB-as-a-Service offering of SurrealDB
Plan, build, and help deliver the SurrealDB-as-a-service private cloud offering, leveraging container orchestration tools
Coordinate improvements and feature requests with product and engineering teams
Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve system security, stability, reliability, and performance
Document systems, and automate processes
Improve engineering standards, testing, tooling, and processes
Write and review technical proposals
Contribute to the SurrealDB documentation
Support the online community with regards to cloud setup and management
Contribute to the SurrealDB blog with posts focussed on cloud and devops
Actively engage with developers internally, and on social media platforms; and attend in-person and/or virtual events

Our take

Though there are many businesses building software for the cloud database marketplace, various studies show that companies are now leaning towards fully managed cloud databases for their processes. SurrealDB has been operating in this the sector since 2020 and received its first round of seed funding in 2023. This is indicative of a rising need for cloud database management companies such as this.

Despite larger competitors, SurrealDB’s services have a more specific aim than just the management of databases. The mission is to improve app development by scaling down reliance on back-end APIs and layering, thus making response times to queries faster and simplifying what is often an interconnected and complicated database of servers and programmes.

The company plans to use its seed funding to onboard more employees and prep its cloud launch in 2024, hoping to expand further in the database-as-a-service industry, which is predicted to grow to a value of $24.8 billion by 2025.
