Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of engineering management experience in cloud-native, data-intensive, or SaaS environments
- Experience leading exceptional engineers and teams in early-to-mid-stage startups
- Hands-on background as a software engineer or technical lead, with the ability to contribute to technical discussions and trade-offs
- Strong familiarity with modern cloud infrastructure and infrastructure as code (e.g., AWS, serverless, containers, IaC frameworks)
- Experience leading teams building platform services, data ingestion systems, or large-scale data processing pipelines
- Demonstrated ability to enforce secure SDLC and DevSecOps best practices
- Excellent communication skills and cross-functional collaboration abilities
- Experience working in a remote-first environment and distributed teams

Desirable
- Experience with healthcare data standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7) or compliance frameworks (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC2)
- Experience working on products with compliance requirements, ideally for CMS/HHS or other governmental agencies
- Familiarity with data engineering technologies (e.g., Spark, data lake/lakehouse architectures, workflow orchestration)
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with experience in scaling startups to lead highly skilled and driven development teams to deliver on product and platform excellence
- In this role, you will drive people leadership, delivery excellence, and technical strategy alongside Tech Leads, Product partners, and cross-functional teams
- You will ensure execution of our product roadmaps, and balance that with technical debt cleanup
- Lead, mentor, and develop engineers through regular 1:1s, coaching, performance reviews and performance management
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance engineering culture
- Hire, onboard, and retain exceptional engineering talent
- Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to build clear, achievable roadmaps and OKRs, and deliver with predictability
- Lead and propose ways to continuously improve our Agile practices and delivery processes across the team
- Track and improve engineering metrics such as code quality, and technical debt
- Promote strong SDLC practices, including testing, CI/CD, security scanning, and operational readiness
- Provide technical direction and participate in architectural decision-making for product and platform
- Collaborate with Tech Leads to design systems that scale with high-volume healthcare data workloads
- Champion reliability, observability, security, and cost-efficient architecture across services and products
- Ensure alignment with compliance, privacy, and secure development standards
- Work closely with Product, Compliance, Operations, and internal engineering teams to understand requirements and define priorities
- Communicate effectively with both technical contributors and senior leadership
- Help integrate platform roadmaps and technical strategies with company-wide initiatives

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a global healthcare interoperability standard currently being adopted by major organizations across the US (including the US government) to facilitate the electronic exchange of healthcare information. 1upHealth is a health-tech company helping new organizations adopt the standard by converting data to FHIR and facilitating data sharing and analytics.
The federal government is pushing the healthcare industry to adopt FHIR-based APIs, which will be to 1upHealth’s benefit. The market appears to still be relatively unpopulated in the US, and as 1upHealth facilitates the entry of others into it, it may carve out a real and lucrative niche. Regulations that push for adoption are already coming into play - since 2021, for example, providers are obliged to make specific data available through FHIR APIs.
This market seems yet to mature in the US, and the 2017-founded 1upHealth could stand to make real progress alongside it as it does. Most recently, the company was ranked the 43rd Fastest-Growing Company in North America on the 2024 Deloitte Technology Fast 500, a significant achievement marking the company one to watch in the developing space.
