Role
Who you are
- You have 3-5 years of commercial experience with JavaScript, particularly with ES6/7+ features, and a strong understanding of technologies like Node.js, React, Next.js and Web APIs
- You possess practical experience monitoring and triaging applications and websites on AWS, and are familiar with CI/CD pipelines
- You understand web design patterns
- You have experience working in a collaborative, agile team environment
- You're familiar with various automated testing methodologies, including unit testing, integration testing, Visual testing and end-to-end testing
- You're passionate about technology and eager to make a significant impact
- You thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy learning new things
- You're a team player with excellent communication skills
- You're proactive and have a strong sense of ownership
- You have experience working in Fintech or for other Payment products
- You are excited about working on a project that uses DDD to build a cutting edge microservices Event Driven Architecture, working with serverless technologies
What the job involves
- As a Frontend Engineer at Motorway, you'll be a key player in building and scaling our platform
- Architect, develop, and maintain new JavaScript and TypeScript code, with a strong focus on React and Next.js, for both new features and performance optimisation. All new code is written in TypeScript
- Construct highly maintainable, reusable, scalable, and reliable code, adhering to best practices and architectural patterns
- Collaborate closely with product managers and designers in an agile environment to deliver exceptional user experiences. This includes participating in user research and contributing to the product roadmap
- Contribute to the technical and product strategy of the business, bringing your frontend expertise to the table
- Champion and implement software development best practices for high-quality, well-tested, and secure code, including advocating for code reviews and knowledge sharing

Our take
Like many industries, the second-hand car market has undergone significant transformation, with more and more dealers and car owners looking to buy and sell cars online. Motorway is one of a handful of online car marketplaces that are capitalising on this trend.
Motorway differentiates itself from traditional e-commerce and brick and mortar stores because it’s a marketplace, rather than an inventory. This allows for improved speed and verification. Owners sell their cars 100% online in as little as 24 hours with free car collection, while Motorway also supports car dealerships with a new channel for acquisition of used car stock.
Since being founded in 2017, Motorway has grown rapidly, achieving unicorn status in 2021. It is planning on putting this capital to use expanding both geographically and internally, adding more features to its already well-reviewed product. One such feature is its ULEZ checker, which allows car buyers to assess the environmental compliance of vehicles.
The biggest challenge Motorway faces is competing with other well-funded competitors jumping on this trend, such as Auto1 and Cazoo, as well as established companies like Webuyanycar.com. However, online penetration in the ÂŁ480 billion British and EU used car market is minimal - suggesting that there is enough market to share amongst Motorway and its competitors.
