Role
Who you are
- You’ll bring a thoughtful mix of user empathy, systems thinking, and visual craft to solve meaningful problems for developers and players alike
- If you’re energized by complex challenges, passionate about games and community, and excited to help shape how studios partner with Discord, we’d love to hear from you
- You have 2+ years of experience designing modern consumer-focused products. We’re open to more entry-level candidates with strong talent
- Highly proficient using Figma and some high-fidelity prototyping tool (ex: Protopie, Framer, Origami, etc). You have a high level of skill at crafting high quality visual designs and have an eye for creating delight in every product experience
- A portfolio of work on which you were the primary designer contributing to projects for both desktop and mobile
- Frequent personal use of Discord, and are passionate about the gaming space/experience
- You proactively form ideas and can communicate them with others through varying formats (documents, prototypes, presentations)
- You collaboratively guide the vision for the product and achieve it through design explorations, documentation, and presentations
- Ownership mindset with a bias towards action, helping to drive projects and decisions forward. Maintains low ego with a focus on progress and growth
- You have experience working with a design system/library
What the job involves
- This role will shape both the developer and player experiences, bringing them together in impactful ways
- You’ll work on everything from the tools studios use to integrate with Discord to the player-facing experiences those integrations enable
- For example, you might design in-game ways to invite Discord friends to play, onboarding flows for studios, or new ways to bring game moments and achievements onto Discord to spark social connection
- Your work will span surfaces like the developer portal, dashboards, self-serve tools, in-game overlays, and the Discord client itself—where players discover games, make new friends, and play together
- As a product designer, you’ll work across the full product development cycle—from early exploration through to launch and iteration
- You will partner with engineers, product managers and other cross-functional peers to oversee the user experience from idea to market
- You will form part of our growing and “EPAD” Organization that includes Engineering, Product, Analytics and Design functions
- You will create wire-frames, beautiful mockups, amazing prototypes, and help implement your designs to pixel perfection. You will also quality check all of your work as it it built, ensuring it reflects your vision perfectly
- You will present and communicate your designs to the team and your design peers to build consensus around your concepts
- You will test, learn, and iterate on everything you do alongside product peers
- You will meaningfully use, maintain and commit towards our Design System library
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 150 million active users in 19 million communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and Twitter, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
