What the job involves
- As Tech Lead, you will play a critical role in defining and driving the technical direction of the company
- Beyond managing our engineering team of Ruby on Rails Software Engineers, you’ll serve as a strategic partner to the Product team and other stakeholders, balancing hands-on technical work with high-level decision-making
- You’ll be responsible for scaling the team, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, and ensuring that our technical solutions meet the evolving needs of the business
- This includes being a key decision-maker in Build vs. Buy strategies and ensuring the PMS remains at the forefront of industry technology
- Technology Vision
- Stay informed about emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to ensure Colonies remains technologically competitive
- Provide expert guidance on Build vs. Buy decisions, balancing internal development with third-party tool integration
- Collaborate with the Product to align technical decisions with the broader roadmap and business priorities
- Ensure the evolution of our robust tech stack, which today includes Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Heroku and Storyblok
- Strategic Thinking
- Define and execute the technical strategy, ensuring alignment with company goals
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance scalability, maintainability, and performance of our tech stack and processes
- Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 5 Ruby on Rails engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Ensure team members feel empowered, aligned with company goals, and fully integrated with cross-functional teams
- Process & Quality
- Oversee the development, implementation, and optimization of engineering processes
- Champion best practices for code quality, testing, and deployment to deliver reliable and scalable solutions
- Resource Management
- Efficiently allocate engineering resources across projects and initiatives, balancing immediate needs with long-term strategic growth

Our take
Colonies is a co-living startup aiming to take the hassle out of renting in large cities. The company provides managed, fully-furnished shared housing, where all community spaces are cleaned and maintained no-fuss, freeing occupants from many of the problems associated with shared living.
A person renting through Colonies receives a private bedroom and bathroom, with living spaces shared between 8 to 12 people. The accommodations are fully equipped and functional, with the possibility to move in within a week, and packages come with all bills included to make pricing as transparent for renters as possible.
The company has seen good funding that has facilitated its expansion from Paris into a number of French cities as well as Berlin and Brussels, across which it manages almost 200 apartments and serves over a thousand tenants. The company has announced a partnership with the CDC Habitat group, a global operator of housing in the public interest, as part of a collaboration that will create a multitude of new co-living residences across major cities.
