What the job involves

  • As we set our sights on increasing the adoption of our products to all 4000+ post-secondary institutions in North America, we’re looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to guide and scale our Test Platform
  • Reporting to the Engineering Manager in Test, you’ll play a critical role in maturing and refining Top Hat’s approach to continuous testing
  • By actively seeking out ways to improve Top Hat’s testing ecosystem and building the platform to support those improvements, you’ll act as an enabling force; allowing developers to deliver value to our customers quickly and safely
  • You’ll work closely with Engineering, Product, Design, and Support to ensure teams have the tools, training, and coaching to ship features that meet Top Hat’s high bar for quality. Working with other Engineering leaders and your team of Test Engineers, you’ll define a vision and roadmap to help quality at TopHat scale
  • Work cross-functionally with Infrastructure, Engineering, Agile, and Product to design and deliver tools, test automation frameworks, and pipelines that support development and testing within Top Hat’s continuous delivery environment
  • Gather continuous feedback about TopHat’s testing ecosystem to ensure we’re solving the right problems for Engineering
  • Work closely with Engineering to measure and increase Top Hat’s test coverage and release confidence
  • Guide test engineers in writing effective, scalable and maintainable automated tests
  • Define and implement domain-level quality and performance metrics, dashboards, and monitoring tools
  • Support onboarding and adoption of new test automation tools and frameworks
  • Follow industry best practices to ensure scalability, maintainability and efficiency of test automation

Our take

Top Hat is at the apex of two major trends in education: the digitisation of platforms for content and the rising costs of higher education for students. By digitising work largely created by professors, Top Hat has delivered engaging content at lower cost for students across Canada and North America.

Where traditional publishers rely on analogue processes to provide high-quality but largely unengaging, uninteractive and expensive textbooks, Top Hat markets the platform to professors to publish their own interactive multimedia online textbooks. This gives them a cut and builds a holistic student experience on top.

The product has now had so much success that Top Hat’s strategy has evolved to include buying those conventional publishers of postsecondary course materials. This means the company can shift those quality materials into digitally distributed versions and make them available on a subscription basis.
